Geologists believe that the Bering land bridge, over which human beings are thought to have first entered the Americans, disappeared about 14,000 years ago when massive glaciers melted and caused the sea level to rise several hundred feet worldwide.

(A) are thought to have first entered
(B) were thought first to enter
(C) were thought at first to enter
(D) are thought of as first entering
(E) were thought to first enter

I googled this question, and people say that because "believe" is present tense, "are thought" is correct.

What about "disappeard" ? It is the past tense.
I picked e to match tense with "disappeard."

Why dose the part " are thought" have to match with "believe" in terms of tense?
The Bering land bridge already disappeared, so isn't it better to pick past tense as the answer?

This kind of tense problem is so confusing to me...

Use present tense to express general truth.

Darwin discovered that theory of evolution is applicable to humans as well. ( even though the disovery happened in the past, it still holds true and hence the usage of present tense.).

E also has another problem . It is missing a have = "were thought to have first entered" would be correct.

B - out because of wrong placement of "first"
C and D - awkward phrasing.

left with A and B

intuitively chose A, possible reasons: 1. "have entered" focuses on the result of the action
2. present tense looks better because of the wording "geologists believe". Interpreted this as generally people still think this way, although geologists believe something different which they have not proved yet.

Well,

According to me B,C, D gone because of wrong placement of First

Left with A and E, now E is wrong because the verb believe tells that something has happened so entered must be used instead of enter. Hence A is true.

A is the right answer because the geologists are thinking now in the present and not in the past. So eliminate all the options which start with were.
That leaves options A and D. D is not idiomatic ,hence A is the right option.

But idiomatically think of + as is correct. Then why option D is out.

Geologists believe that the Bering land bridge, over which human beings are thought to have first entered the Americans, disappeared about 14,000 years ago when massive glaciers melted and caused the sea level to rise several hundred feet worldwide.

(A) are thought to have first entered - Correct
(B) were thought first to enter - universal truth , hence "were thought is wrong"
(C) were thought at first to enter - universal truth , hence "were thought is wrong"
(D) are thought of as first entering - "entering " - continuous tense is wrong as humans have already entered.
(E) were thought to first enter - universal truth , hence "were thought is wrong"
