Geologists believe that the warning signs for a major earthquake may include sudden fluctuations in local seismic activity, tilting and other deformations of the Earth's crust, changing the measured strain across a fault zone, and varying the electrical properties of underground rocks.
A. changing the measured strain across a fault zone, and varying
B. changing measurements of the strain across afault zone, and varying
C. changing the strain as measured across a faultzone, and variations of

between B and D.(ll to original structure) Orignal setence says "changing the measured strain" -->warning singn B little distortion to thethe original meaning. "changing measurements of the strain across" -- warning sign --> chaning measurements -- warning sign D -- changes in "measured strain" D better than B. Any other reasoning..????

A. changing the measured strain across a fault zone, and varying -> eliminate since this is not in parallel with sudden fluctuations
B. changing measurements of the strain across afault zone, and varying -> eliminate
C. changing the strain as measured across a faultzone, and variations of -> eliminate
D. changes in the measured strain across a faultzone, and variations in -> BEST IMO (D)
E. changes in measurements of the strain across a fault zone, and variations among -> eliminate due to variations among which suggests preexistant variations and not the one which acts as indicator of quake.
Why isn't A correct? It is parallel to " tilting and other deformations of the Earth's crust"

Why isn't A correct? It is parallel to " tilting and other deformations of the Earth's crust" (A) is incorrect since sudden fluctuations in local seismic activity, tilting and other deformations of the Earth's crust is to be viewed as a single clause and here tilting goes with seismic activity .We need to look for parallelism between fluctuations and changes .Hence (D) is perfect

I have to admit this one got me, but I now, I get it! The take-away here is to look for parallelism in parts of speech. With the "ing", it can be a verb or a noun. Once you figure it is a noun, all the others in the series have to also be a noun. Great question
