Geologists once thought that the molten rock known as lava was an underground remnant of Earth's earliest days, sporadically erupting through volcanoes, but they now know that it is continuously created by the heat of the radioactivity deep inside the planet.

(A)was an underground remnant of Earth's earliest days, sporadically erupting

(B)had been an underground remnant of Earth's earliest days and sporadically erupted
(C)was an underground remnant of Earth's earliest days, which sporadically erupted
(D)would be an underground remnant of Earth's earliest days that sporadically erupted
(E)was an underground remnant of Earth's earliest days, having sporadically erupted

OA is A.
Can someone please explain the answer in detail ?

I can't decide between A and C. What's wrong with C? Maybe it's unclear if it refers to lava or earth?

(A)was an underground remnant of Earth's earliest days, sporadically erupting (hold it)
(B)had been an underground remnant of Earth's earliest days and sporadically erupted ( Once thought – requires simple past – Eliminate it)
(C)was an underground remnant of Earth's earliest days, which sporadically erupted (modifier “which” points to preceding noun – in this case “Earth's earliest days” – Improperly modifying the meaning – Eliminate it)
(D)would be an underground remnant of Earth's earliest days that sporadically erupted (“Would” not relevant – eliminate it)
(E)was an underground remnant of Earth's earliest days, having sporadically erupted (This choice is also close, but why “having” – implies only once occurring event – eliminate it)

Answer: A
