Is it Worth It?At this time of the year, many candidates are pondering whether they should apply to the Columbia full-time MBA program under the January-start option. Some candidates are considering January-start because they want to start business school soon – they could matriculate in January 2017! They don’t want to have to wait over a year to begin business school in August/September 2017.
Other candidates are considering January-start, rather than the August-start option, because they know they have a notable flaw in their candidacy and they don’t believe they can override that flaw in the more competitive August-start admissions pool. The January-start application pool is the easiest of the three full-time MBA program application pools at Columbia, partly because in order to partake in the January-start option, you must attend Columbia full-time during the summer months and therefore you must forgo the summer internship you would have had in a typical two-year full-time August-start MBA program.
Sometimes candidates for the January-start program struggle with the question of whether they should be willing to give up a summer internship in order to partake in the January-start program, even if that means they may gain admission to Columbia when they otherwise could not. Is it worth it?
How should you think about this?
In many ways, it is like weighing the long-term benefits of a Columbia degree – with its prestige and formidable alumni network – against the short-term benefits of an internship.
Is it really necessary for you to partake in an internship in order to land your short-term dream job? As yourself that question. Are there other means to gain access to a company you would have targeted for an internship? For instance, Columbia offers capstone projects or mini-internships during the school year through which you might gain access to your desired company.
If you have to choose between being a Columbia graduate forever because you were willing to apply under January-start – with the pedigree that Columbia bestows you – and being a graduate of a less prestigious MBA program that has more modest resources, a less powerful alumni network and a less shiny pedigree… which is the right choice for you? Only you can answer this question. But weigh the calculation well if you know you have a notable flaw and January-start may offer you the only viable avenue to a school as prestigious as Columbia Business School.
