Hi Ashish,

Unfortunately, a 490 is a major barrier to admission. Historically, people with exceptional qualifications have gotten in to good schools with low scores--recently, a 490 got into Harvard!--but these are exceptions, not the rules. Even lower-tier B-schools are usually looking for scores in the 500-550 range.

Can you be a little more specific about your work experience and school background? A very high GPA from a top-tier undergraduate institution, combined with a job history illustrating a lot of responsibility and/or rapid advancement in the company, could help your admissions process quite a bit--though you'd still want to try to pull that score up.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Dear Eli Sir,
Thank you for your reply and guidance. I really appreciate your gesture.
I have been into sales and marketing of pharmaceuticals from last 4 yrs. I have worked in various speciality segments such as cardiac, diabetic, enzymes and vaccines. I have excelled in all the training programs held at respective companies in which I have been adjudged as the best among the lot. In enzymes segment, I have successfully launched products at various head-quaters. In sports I have played various tournaments at national and state level, games such as soccer, volleyball and cricket. I think, this is it.

I agree with Eli. I think you need to pull that score up to say around 600. Even if you have a great under grad GPA, a 490 raises questions on the ease with which a 490 can be obtained in your college. Also, the adcom may not be very impressed with state/national level players (An Olympic medalist would probably coerce them to overlook the 490). If you go ahead with this score, you will only be trying to balance out your below average score (for the good US B-schools) with a great application. Where is the edge then? Try to obtain an average score at least and then create the edge with your application.

Dear Karishma M'am,
Thank you for your guidance. I am surely gonna give gmat again, there is no doubt in it. I was just thinking if I don't get a good score this time, then what are my probabilities of getting into a good university with such a profile. The things which you have pointed out are correct. I too need around 650 very badly. Once again thanks for your kind support.
