GMAT-720 [#permalink] New post 30 Jun 2005, 19:57
Hi everyone

Did the GMAT a couple of days back:
720(96%)

Q 49 (90%)
V 41(93%)

Just a couple of thoughts abt preparation etc:

1)Kaplan verbal isn't put together that well. So don't let a bad Kap verbal score get to you. I did not agree with some of their explanations-thought they made questions hard by making them ambigous.

That said,I think Kapalan verbal helped me. I mean sifting through their long and incredibly boring RCs really trained me for the final day.Kaplan verbal is hard-I recommend doing it.

2)SCs were my weakest link in verbal prep. I didn't bother absorbing the "technical" aspects of grammar in school-and just got by seeing if sentences "sounded right". As far as GMAT prep goes,I recommend going through each and every SC on OG(if you find SCs hard).

3)Quant was never a problem for me until I screwed up a bit on test day.I was looking at a 51,I had got a 50 on a Kap test,85% on a challenge and had never scored below 48 on any practice test except for the 1st Kap.

I think what really went wrong was in my planning, temperament etc. I was so obsessed with "nailing" every single question that I crosschecked my answers a litle too much. From around the 25 question mark-I was under increasing time pressure.I think I was only 4 minutes behind schedule at this stage, but then I got a few questions which I usually take more time to solve. These are questions with inequalities(DS question) and ,modulus, where u have to consider a number of cases.I tried rushing through it-relaised I had missed a case, went back, thought I missed another case..you get the picture. The very next question, I got another one which took time.Ended up just taking a guess-then another few questions where I had no time and had to guess.

The questions got remarkably easy towards the end-which is what really helped me complete the test. The last question was pretty much a division question which I finished in 3 seconds.(the time taken for me to read the question)

Finished with 1 second(literally!) to spare.

4)Verbal was pretty smooth. No problems with timing (I took pains to ensure that) and my score was exactly what I expected. I got 2 bold face CRs-one at around question 19 and another late(maybe 35)

Have been preparing on and off since Feb. I wld prepare...wonder whether I shd bother taking the GMAT this year, change my mind prepare.....

Finally decided in end May to take it and prepared properly for about a month

Strategy:I think its very important to gauge your level through a NUMBER OF INDICATORS,and use tests to work out where ur weak points are. Then keep hammering away at the weak links.

The worst thing you could do keep doing tests without any real purpose...also note that sometimes tests aren't worth doing.(for instance if u were really constrained for time,it wld be a much better idea to work on ur weak points(gauged from a FEW tests) rather than complete everyone of the tests you possess. That said, its also important to work on timing and test taking abilkity,temperament...so u defn need to take a few tests!

What I'm stressing on here is balance(I think). It's a long, rambling post and I'm sure it's difficult to make sense of...but please forgive me,I'm a little sleepy right now
