There are many benefits to timing your practice, including:
I took the GMAT and got a 690 (87th percentile). V35, Q49. I plan to apply to the top 10 business schools for an MBA in finance. Do you think I need to retake the test to get a 700+ score? I have a 3.75 GPA from a very good engineering school (Undergrad in Mechanical Engineering). 2.5 years work experience in the Automotive manufacturing industry. Lot of global experience - Internships in Germany, China & India. Not a lot of extracurricular activity while in undergrad. I plan to join large family business after MBA.
How did you prep for the first test? What kind of time can you devote to studying if you were to retake the exam?
If you can devote a good amount of time verbal while keeping your quant skills sharp it might be worth retaking the test. I've noticed that good verbals scores tend to tick up the overall score more than solid quant.
Although 690 is a solid score and I think that it falls in the 20/80 range of every school. It obviously can't hurt to up your score, but without knowing more about your background it is hard to tell how much more it could help. I am no admissions expert, but lucky for you there are dozens of experts that you can reach out to on this forum. I'd recommend posting this question or scheduling a free consultation with an admissions consultant. They can typically give you a realistic idea of what utility you can expect to gain by retaking the GMAT.
