GMAT 700 (Q50, V35) need your suggestion [#permalink] New post 07 Apr 2012, 10:53
Hi,

I took the GMAT today, got an unofficial score 700 (Q50, V35).
Not quite sure whether this is a good score... can anybody guide?

I understand that it depends on my target school and my own profile. Hence sharing those info:

I am an Indian Male with 8.5 years of work ex ( Non - IT !! Yes Indians work for Non IT as well ... ) - 4 years in manufacturing followed by marketing and marketing research.

Education: Graduate Engineer and a Part Time 3 year MBA from IIM-Calcutta (equivalent to full time 2 year course)

Career Objective: In India, Part time MBA is not quite recognized to be at par with full time and hence has limited market value. So I need a full time MBA from a good institute. But as I have a family to support, I would 'prefer' a one year thing.

Preferred Choices:
IIM Ahmedabad - One year PGPX
IIM Calcutta - One Year PGPEx
IIM Bangalore - One Year EPGP
ISB - One Year Full Time MBA

Apart from that I will definitely try global (US, UK, Europe) schools (If they take me of course  ).

Can You guide me about
1. what is the probability that I can get into my preferred schools?
2. Which global school should I try apart from these Indian schools?
3. Is my score good enough for good global schools like the types of HBS, Kellogg etc considering my work ex... If not what choice am I left with?

I also need guidance from you guys about what should I do next, where should I apply, when is the time etc...

thanks in advance,

Arun

IMO, 700 is a good score for any school. Rest depends on how good the rest of your profile looks like.

Hi,

You have touched that magical 7 digit in your GMAT, so you have decent score on hand.

As far as your chances for the given four programs is concerned, all IIM one year programs ( other than IIM A ) is very much within your reach, rather you should be a strong candidate for these programs, however i would encourage you to apply to IIM-A if you have strong profile in work ex with stellar recos. ISB is also within reach and you should apply in 1st round.

For suggestions of programs on other than you mentioned , the choice depends on lot of factors

1) where do you want to settle post MBA
2) What is your budget for one year MBA
3) What is your long term and short term goal etc.

For your universal Q , which schools accept this score ? , the answer is all :), you have to identify schools of your choice and then apply

Please understand GMAT is a part of application, essays, reco, interviews etc follow the score.

You have done well for the first part of your journey to MBA - GMAT , so your score is not now hindrance for you to apply any school, but then again you need to analyze two points

1) what schools want - what kind of students do school prefer ( age, background , geography etc ) , you can learn about this by scouting the websites of targeted school.
2) What you want - ( 1 yr , budget, specialization, etc )

hope this helps

good luck with your application

Hi,

I am pretty much in the same boat as you.

Most of the people who apply for IIM PGPX courses have a gmat score of 730+.IMHO 700 is only the 90th percentile and considering the number of applicants who would apply from India , may fall a bit short unless supported by stellar achievement in work.
