GMAT- 730 gutted,seriously thinking of a retake [#permalink]
15 Feb 2012, 02:03
Hi, appeared for GMAT on this valentines and came out with my heart broken. Scored a decent 730 but which is the lower range of my scores in practice tests. Breakup 51q 36v this is one of the least I have scored in verbal ever and i believe let my emotion take control of me in verbal and mismanaged time. A long debrief to follow soon but any suggestion would be helpful.

Congrats on a good score! Will wait for your detailed debrief, but would highlight that there's no reason to be gutted by a 730. What were your practice scores on verbals? Which mock tests did you do?

Santanu.... I owe you and slingfox a big THANK YOU for it was your's and slingfox's debriefs which helped me through the preparation period specially after the initial MGMAT CAT's
My Practice Tests scores
MGMAT-1 670 q45 v36 MGMAT-2 690 q48 v36 MGMAT-3 700 q47 v39 MGMAT-4 710 q48 v39 MGMAT-5 780 q51 v45 MGMAT-6 780 q51 v45
800Score-1 790 q51 v48 800Score-2 740 q50 v40 800Score-3 780 q51 v45 800Score-4 740 q50 v40 800Score-5 750 q51 v40
GMATPrep1 720 q50 v36 GMATPrep1(retake) 780 q50 v48 GMATPrep2 770 q50 v44 GMATPrep2(retake) 770 q50 v44
The last 5 test I took I Scored greater than 760 and with a accuracy of 100 percent in RC and encountered monstrous (5-6 paras each) RCs in the actual test which threw off my time management as well.
I know 730 is a decent score but may try once more for my personal satisfaction because I believe I can do much better

First things first, 730 is a good score. Congrats! Consider retake only after thoughtful considerations. Second, I have my Gmat in the coming week, and my practice scores are quite similar to yours. However, I get this strong feeling now and then that verbal on the real test can put you off badly. Any particular observations/suggestions on the difference b/w the test day verbal and the practice tests' verbal ?

Congrats on the 730! Although I see why you might consider re-taking given your practice scores, I personally would not. I don't think most adcoms see a huge difference between 730 and, say, 760.
If you do though, best of luck in improving your score!

Thank You all for your wishes....
@vailad Apologies for the late reply.....the verbal part is a little tricky to skip a question and move ahead specially when it is a RC question unlike Quant. and I personally depended a lot on RC for my speed to cover up for taking more time on SC. I think that backfired so be prepared for all eventualities.
Though I found Quant to be extremely easy. Had time to solve almost every question twice but have heard peoplemuch better than me in Quant to struggle with some question so it depends on your luck as well (a little bit).
All the best for you exam.

Whoa! You are probably the first person I have come across, who depends on RC to cover the extra time spent on SC - coincidentally, that is so much the case with me. I get through most RCs in less than a minute per question with near perfect accuracy, the time better spent on SC and CR. Unfortunately, I hear, that is what backfired. At 51, you must have had encountered few difficult questions in Quant - either you are too good, or too lucky.

I wouldn't retake. I would spend your time making the rest of your application better because a 730 is good enough to get in anywhere.

Congrats,
I think a retake may be a waste of time and money. You may even score lower. The score you have can get you into most top schools. I think you have to focus now on the other aspects of your application. The score is not the only thing AdComs focus on.... so my good friend move on...no time to waste.
Share your debrief soon.
All the best,

I too feel that a retake may not be the wisest thing to do with your score. I think you are in a state where its more of a case of proving to GMAT that you are better than what you scored. As a lot of members have said, work on your application as the scores are just a part of the entire application. At the end of the day, you are of course the best judge!!
