GMAT 740 (Q46, V46, AWA 6.0, IR 6) -- retake? [#permalink] New post 06 Jun 2013, 20:19
Hi, I know this may sound absurd to some of you guys here but I'm seriously wondering whether I should retake my GMAT.

As a quick point of introduction, I am a fresh college grad who will be working at a top tier consulting firm (not MBB, but think of OW, Deloitte) starting this fall.

So here's the thing -- my verbal came out to be higher than what I expected/usually got from practice tests, while my Quant was significantly lower. Also, the low IR is kinda alarming as well.

My stats are as follows:
undergrad: lower-tier Ivy (think of Cornell, Brown)
GPA: 3.89
strong ECs
international student, female

While I don't plan to apply to b-schools until a few years later, I just want to get over with GMAT asap before I start work because I don't think I can push myself to study for it while working. With current GMAT score at hand, do you guys think I should retake, esp. to maximize my chances at top b-schools such as HBS/Stanford/Wharton? While I know that 740 isn't a bad score at all, I can't stop thinking that I could've done better in math...

No way. It's will seem as nitpicky, and you have higher than average score for all schools including H/S/W. Instead take all that free time you have and would have used to study for the GMAT and use it to do something else that will help your profile more: like start volunteering somewhere, gaining some sort of leadership position, starting that dreamed of startup, etc.

You are in great position already! Go out and celebrate your GMAT score! Champagne!!!

ds632,
If your quant percentile is under the 80th percentile, you should retake. Given that you are aiming high, the GMAT is such a key factor, you haven't taken it more than 3 time, and you have some time, even if it's not below the 80th percentile, you should retake it if you have some indication that you could raise it (e.g., practice scores, or you haven't used a GMAT prep service).

Even though 740 GMAT is a very good GMAT score, you should try retaking the test because, as you said , your qaunt score is significantly low and your IR is also alarmingly low. You have 3-4 years before you apply, so in addition to strengthening your profile in other areas e.g. community service, leadership experiences etc, you may use this time in improving your quant and IR score as well. B-schools like to see quant and verbal scores above 80 percentile .
