It is exciting time - after months of work, we are ready to roll out thread tagging functionality for our forums.

What are Tags?
Tags and tagging are a way to classify and organize posts on GMAT Club - these are post categories. There are several ways to structure posts - one is the current structure where questions are organized by question type such as DS, PS, CR, RC, and SC. Another way would be by topic such as - geometry, assumptions, book reviews, etc, yet another would be by question difficulty, and so on. With forum structure, we are limited to the forums and one post can only live in one forum, but with tags - we have a lot more freedom. For example a post can be tagged as a "Hard" "Assumption Question" and "GMATPrep" and belong to 3 distinct sets of discussions.

How will Tags help me with my GMAT and MBA Application?
  • Identify question and topic types quickly while browsing tagged forums (Math & Verbal questions and BSchool Application forums are the first to be tagged), you will see a set of tags associated with many of the posts. For example take a look at Critical Reasoning Forum. (Not all posts may be tagged - we are still working on it and is something we can use your help with ;))
  • Find specific topics and specific practice question types. For example visit this post - you will see a number of tags - click any of them and you will get a list of all other posts in this forum (only in this forum) that use this tag.
  • Find Similar Topics. If you have a question or topic you are interested in, click "Find Similar Topics" to display related discussions. For example, you find a post that uses tags such as "Hard", "Assumption Questions" and "GMATPrep". If you click "find similar topics", the forum will list all posts with these 3 tags first, then it will list posts with at least 2 tags, and finally posts that contain only one of the tags, thus allowing to see ALL related posts, based on relevance.

Who Tags Topics?
  • Any GMAT Club member can add/remove tags - if there is only one tag - add one first and then remove the old one
  • Topic author is presented with a list of tags that may apply to a post in that particular forum. The author is currently not required to select a tag to start a new thread but is strongly encouraged.

Can I see All Tags?
Yes, you can see all Tags used in every forum here: viewforumtags.php

How can I get involved?
  • We have quite a bit of effort ahead to tag and categorize many of the posts. In the first 3 forums and then in others - any assistance you can offer in tagging discussions is appreciated
  • Suggest new or improve existing tags by contacting one of the administrators

Can I add my own tags?
At this time tags are assigned by Administrators and the forum does not support custom user tags. If you have a good tag in mind for one of the forums, please PM myself or Dzyubam and we will add it.

Why only a few forums support tags?
We are starting with Quant & Verbal Forums as well as Bschool Application - the forums that would gain the most value from adding tag functionality. We are working on rolling out this functionality to the rest of the GMAT Club forums, depending on adoption and feedback we receive after the initial deployment

Why are only the latest discussions Tagged?
That's because we are still working on tagging the best and latest topics - you can help as you browse.
Login first. Then as you browse, you can add tags by moving your mouse over the "Add a Tag" link. Pick a tag from the drop down menu. You can also remove tags if you feel the post is mis-classified by clicking "X" next to each of the tags.

My posts keep getting mis-tagged - what do I do?
We keep track of all tag transactions in a log. Please contact one of the administrators if you feel that your work is getting sabotaged and we will address the issue with the offenders.

Is it possible to change the position of the tags in the forum view?

The position of the tags above the post title makes for a pretty cluttered look. If they were below the title and maybe in a smaller font, it would make for a much cleaner look.

Just a suggestion!!

Thank you for the suggestion!
I was thinking about that. However, my thinking was to move them AFTER the post title, so for example like this:

Probability with cards (Probability, Combinations)

Any thoughts?

We do have an option to turn off tags completely in the Forum View...

Nice!!! I like that even better than my idea.

I think as long as the thread title is focus of view, it will work. Often there are a lot of threads and it's nice to be able to just quickly scan the page and find the threads that interest you.

Oh thanks :)

Third option would be to have a separate column with tags (similarly how there is a column for author, number of posts, and number of replies).

Let's try the option with tags after the topic - we'll try to do it tonight and then we'll see.

Oh good, I was going to ask about this too. I was going to ask if I could turn them off for myself, it makes my eyes hurt. I think maybe having them underneath will work out well.

Much better!
I added my option (without links to tag search):

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Tags: Combinations, Min/Max Problems
Image Area of rectangle

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Image Area of rectangle (Tags: Combinations, Min/Max Problems)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Image Area of rectangle
Combinations, Min/Max Problems

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Image Area of rectangle
Tags: Combinations, Min/Max Problems

----------------------------------------------------------------------

By the way, I was trying to add rating feature to each option (it would be cool when everyone could simply rate each option.) but ratings seem to work as one rating if they are placed in the same post... Is it hard to fix?

And one more suggestion. Tags + multi pages posts. When I see first post at let's say 3rd page, it seems that tags are related to this particular post but not to the topic. Maybe it would be better to show tags only at first page? Or separate them from top posts?

Use them like this:
Code:
[rating1]yellow/Thread_Number[/rating1]

In this case, thread number is 82651
If you want to use a second ranking - add a "2" to be 826512, and so on.

Another 2 options are :
1. Turn off display in forums
2. move tags to where Author is or create a similar column

I hear ya. Here is my logic placing it where it was placed and of course open to be swayed:
- Need some convenient place that would not crowd things and also provide a wide area for a few tags to fit
- Need it to be noticeable (top area is mostly ignored by people/they become blind to it)
- After a few uses, one will know that tags are for the post rather than just the post, so I believe despite some confusion with new members, regular guys (who are most likely to use tags) would be Ok.

That was the best spot I found. However, if there is a better spot for them - happy to move - that's easy.
