GMAT Club Tests are killing me - Need Advice [#permalink] New post 13 Aug 2009, 01:08
GMAT Quant is my weakness. I have spent several months now raising my math aptitude. I felt very comfortable exhausting the OG quant section and other GMAT quant books that test the full range of difficulty. I thought I was ready for the Challenges, but after 7 exams (m01 - m07) consistently scoring between 22-25 correct out of 37, yielding 30-38 percentile, I feel I am failing and getting nowhere. At first, I thought my score would gradually improve, and the plan was to build my way up through all 25 exams. I always review my mistakes and learn at levels not taught in the books I've previously studied, but its easy to doubt myself seeing my score trend a straight line after 7 exams. My goal is to at least score Q45 and I have only 2 months until the exam.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how I should view my scores? In other words, how bad are they for one aiming at a Q45. And most importantly, does anyone have any advice on the plan I should follow the next 2 months? Thanks!

What is really happening is that the scoring system is flawed. You can change your answers while reviewing the tests and that changes your percentile. Further, you can take the tests again, skewing the percentile ranking. What GMATClub can do is:

1. Not allowing you to change your answers while reviewing the tests.
2. Do not count scores of repeat test takers (it is cheating anyway). That is it may show the candidate the percentile improvement but do not use that percentile to judge the performance of new test takers.

These two steps will go a long way in instilling fairness about the GC tests.

First of all, don't get discouraged! You're doing good. Please see this thread for result correlation between real GMAT Quant and our Tests. As far as I can see, you're standing good enough. Here's a link:

Yep, or if you are saving GMATprep, you can try PowerPrep (previous version) or another test in combination with GMAT Score Estimator/Calculator

Do NOT take heed of the percentages. I swear they are are the most demoralizing aspect of the test. I think it would be wise for the moderators to remove the percentages since they don't really contribute anything. Even if the percentages were correct, those who know they are good at math don't need a percentage to verify the are better than 90% of other gmatclub test takers. Those who are still struggling with the material will be shocked to find their percentile is <40%.

I swear that people are either cheating or there is some bug in the server. My last several tests were:

m01 31 37 84% 83.4548 sec 84%
m02 33 37 89% 93.8058 sec 1250 90%
m03 30 37 81% 111.1665 sec 1250 80%
m04 33 37 89% 107.7445 sec 1250 91%
m05 29 36 81% 122.0276 sec 1250 82%
m06 24 33 73% 136.3358 sec 1250 53%
m07 28 37 76% 121.3407 sec 1250 65%
m08 20 34 59% 124.5703 sec 1250 39%
m09 24 37 65% 95.5053 sec 1250 35%
m10 26 37 70% 93.1578 sec 1250 54%

The first time I took gmatprep1 and 2 I received a Q49 and Q50, so unless ~30% of Gmatclub test takers are getting 50+ the percentiles on the gmatclub tests probably aren't accurate. As you can see, I followed a similar trend where I started out with a 84% and gradually decreased. I think the tests just get harder...

Finally, make sure to NOT pay attention to the 10-question special test percentages. They are even more ridiculous than the full-length gmatclub ones. They are supposedly the most difficult questions, and I managed to get a 9/10 on one of them for a 71% and a 7/10 for a 36%. Definitely not confidence-inspiring tests...

I basically started using other sources in addition to gmatclub tests because they are demoralizing. Half the battle on the gmat is confidence and gmatclub tests certainly don't inspire any.

Thank you all for the helpful tips. The percentile comparison to the # of correct answer score seems to have materially changed over the last year. You guys opened my eyes and lifted my hopes. I will henceforth measure my performance/improvement with the actual # of correct answers than with the percentile.

I think the Challenges are great! I just hope they are all I need for the next two months to distinguish my score on test day. If anybody has a better or additional strategy to taking the challenges, reviewing the mistakes, and keeping an error log, please let me know. Thanks again!
