I took the GMAT test yesterday and scored a 760 (Q50, V42).

My prep was of 750-760 level and I had imagined for a band of 720-760....so Im pretty relaxed to be at higher end...

Im quite happy to meet my targets and look forward to applications. (Given market conditions and demands of my job, I might apply in R2 only and that too to 2-3 colleges against earlier planned 5)

Background: I am an Indian with close to 7 years of exp. I sat for GMAT as I’m planning to apply for some MFin/PHD programs. I’m a proud father of a baby girl….given that she is only 6 months old…I missed some precious
moments for this brutal exam :-(…but hopefully she will understand when she will be grown up

I really want to thank GMATClub and all wonderful people on board. Special thanks to BB for his kind support...and to Akhikesh for keeping me motivated.

My Practice Scores (from latest to last)

MGMAT-4(750), GMAT Prep Reatke-1 (760)…Retake -2 ( 770),MGMAT -3 (730),
8th Aug Kaplan-5 790 55 51, 4th Aug Kaplan-4 720 54 35, 2nd Aug Kaplan-3 750 55 42 , 25th July Kaplan-3 730 55 36, 21st July Kaplan-2 700 49 39, 3rd July Veritas Free Test 670 47 39, 26th June Princeton Free Test 680 51 33, 17th June Knewton Free Test 710 49 36 , 28th May MGMAT-1 720 49 39, 21st May GMAT Prep-2 710 51 35 , 15th May GMAT Prep-1 760 51 43

I gave many of these exams (specially non MGMAT/GMAT prep) for practice and always experimented few things like finishing Maths in 40 minutes , giving more for RCs etc

Material used

Books I used and now highly recommend
OG12, OG Verbal, MGMAT Advanced math, Powercore CR, SC Bibles, Aristotle SC

Books I used and found ok

Kaplan800, Kaplan Premier-2011, SC

Books I used and was disappointed
MGMAT - Geometry, RC, CR

Books I didn’t use and now regret
GMAT Club Tests (I finished only 5 Tests), OG Maths Guide, Aristotle RC-99

Books I didn’t use and I am glad
Everything else…(I like, so many people before, will vouch for using only good quality material)

Test day

Quant
My first question was a sitter on calculating percent increase in a share price...and this is what I do all my day :-(
.....still in exam I got panicked and took 7 minutes to solve it....
After that rest of exam was always about not letting it get derailed....in the end I managed to finish exam with some good time left....but that shock of first question must have affected my accuracy

Verbal and AWA went smooth

Suggestions:
•Don’t overestimate your strengths….I somehow “ assumed” that I will get a 99 in Maths and paid price in the end…luckily Verbal managed the day for me...
Practice , practice and practice
•Use only good quality material ( no substitute for official guides)
•Only Use GMAT Prep and MGMAT tests if you are short on time
•Be completely relaxed in last 2-3 days….I dint study for 2 days leading into the exam

Awesome score! you managed all this with a 6-month old baby - that is certainly a great commitment!

- Can you share more about your Verbal prep?

SC: I remember that you were struggling with SC in the last 15-20 days. Did Aristotle SC book help? Also, the SC questions on the real GMAT did they seem more difficult that practice ones from MGMAT or OG 12 last 20 qs?
CR: How were you doing in CR during your prep? and how do you describe the CR questions on real GMAT? I have now read in quite some posts that CR questions on the real GMAT are more convoluted or tricky than the ones in practice exams from MGMAT, GMATPrep or even OG12.
RC: Which source did you use for preping this area or were you good at it already? Did you use RC99 and was it of any help?

I found Aristotle SC even better than MGMAT SC...questions were little lengthier than OG12 ( may closer to last 20 q)....but similar to MGMAT CATs

CR: How were you doing in CR during your prep? and how do you describe the CR questions on real GMAT? I have now read in quite some posts that CR questions on the real GMAT are more convoluted or tricky than the ones in practice exams from MGMAT, GMATPrep or even OG12.
I think I always did well in CR...PowerScore CR was the best resource....questions in real GMAT were same as OG12
I did see many fill in the blanks and bold faced questions…so I might have done ok in CR

I mostly struggled in RCs in Kaplan and MGMAT CATs....but surprisingly did well in GMAT prep + OG12
Questions in real GMAT were very similar to OG12...3 passages were short.....last one was lengthy
I luckily found one paragraph based on a TED video I have already seen…so that might have helped

Great advice and congrats on the score! Also it's impressive that you stuck through with intense practice even after reaching your goal score on practice tests--excellent discipline and your efforts clearly paid off!

This is a stupendous achievement given the fact that you have an infant :) I think that with a 760 you'd be very competitive at all the schools you're targeting if you manage to keep the other parts of your application strong.
By the way, I understand Phd, but any specific reason why MFin instead of MBA ?

Im already an MBA and looking for further education only to learn few new things...repeating MBA wont help

MFin will be focused to what Im concentraiting on

This must have motivated you more than anything else to get gmat out of your plate ASAP. Everyone needs a reason and you appeared to have a really compelling reason.

Congratulations buddy! One can only imagine how difficult this must have been with your new born.

I noticed you thanked Akhilesh too, I'm guessing you meant AkhileshGupta. He's helped a lot of people, including me before my 3rd attempt last month; huge motivator. Hope he's well, he just wrote too recently.

Btw, could you elaborate a bit more on Manhattan Advanced Math book please? I'm pulling out all stops to write again and pull up my quant score and wanted to know what you thought about it.

Congratulations on the great score. Which schools are on your radar for the MS in Finance course ? And just curious why the plan to go for a masters again after already having an MBA from India ? I have heard about a lot of people in India who already have MBAs but still go for a second one or for a course like MS Finance or PHD, but I have never understood the rationale behind that. It'd be great if you can share your point of view
