Explanation:
Official Answer: EThere were 100 - 60 = 40 men surveyed. We further read that 20 men were smokers. Thus 40-20=20 men were non-smokers. We have enough information to answer the question. \frac{40 - 20}{40} = 50% of men surveyed were non-smokers. Note that the question stem gives us some redundant information about how many women were smokers.

total --> 100 female --> 60 male --> 40 female smokers --> 10 therefore female non smokers ---> 50 male smokers -->20 therefore male non smokers --> 40 - 20 = 20. Now the tricky part.. its the percentage of men who smoked, which is = 20/40 = 50%

I don't think this is a 700-level question. I think it's more of a 550 - 600. bb wrote: GMAT Diagnostic Test Question 23Field: word problems (overlapping sets) Difficulty: 700

But please don't remove it from the list... people will start dropping dead of brain fatigue if such Qs are not spread within the other 700s

oh, I made a stupid mistake on this one. I thought it's asking what is the % of men non-smoker surveyed. Should had read the question more clearly.

Usually, i find it more comfortable to use chats for sets and mixtures related problems. M W SMOKERS 20 10 NONSMOKERS 20 50 ================================== 40 60 ==================================

 Damn. Due to apparent simplicity of the problem, I even did not read the question carefully. thus I have selected B as well.

I also believe it's a quite easy question! I made this while reading the question. Explanation: Total =100 Women = 60 So, Men = 40 Women smokers = 10 (I think this info. is of no use!) Men Smokers = 20 So, Non Smoker Men = 40 - 20 = 20 %age of men who smoke = 20/40 = 50% = E Quite a simple problem

Sigh, The carelessness has got me again. I think when looked at alone, it is not a hard question but when you couple it with the real toughies you tend to get distracted and miss the easy ones like these. Good test of alertness

Perhaps I'm getting lucky. I doubt this is a 700+ question.
100*.6 = 60; so Women = 60 and Men = 40. If 20 of 40 men are smoker, then that means that 50% all men are smokers.
