Here is my entry.

I created this Error Log to help in my own GMAT studying and the tools in it were features which were very helpful to me. I tried to keep it as simple as possible and to minimize the amount of inputs for the user but also provide maximum utility. I knowingly did not add functionality to analyze specific types of problems (algebra, arithmetic, percents, strengthen argument, etc) as I found the data entry needed to analyze the results was too time consuming. I felt that time could be better utilized elsewhere - like doing more problems. I also did not add any fancy macros as it has been my experience that sometimes those things can crash your program depending on your computer.

Instead I focused on creating something where you could quickly find the problems you should revisit based on a few criteria: 1) Accuracy; 2) Speed; and 3) Comfort Level with each answer. These were critical things to me as I obviously wanted to review problems I got wrong but I also wanted to review problems that took me too long to solve or questions where I might have just gotten lucky by guessing.

I hope many/someone out there find(s) it useful. If there are enough requests and it is easy enough I will try to provide a copy for Apple users (I own an Apple but I use the Windows side of it for all MS Office stuff - dont like the Apple versions of Excel or Word). The file is open for all to see the coding.

Attaching an error log that I made on Google Spreadsheet. With me using different machines at different places (work, home etc.), I thought a Google Doc will help me keep track of all of it in one single place. So, here it is : https://bit.ly/ErrorLog

It's a Google Spreadsheet with View only permission. Please login with your Google accounts and select the option make a copy to have your own copy in Google Drive. The one that I am sharing is not editable.

Quick notes:

1. Use the "Quant Error Log" and "Verbal Error Log" sheets to enter quant and verbal error data. Since these are questions that you got wrong, your answer / OA doesn't make a lot of sense. However, if you think you should have it, feel free to add them.

2. Fields Topic, Difficulty, Reason for failure and Remarks are indexed. ie., if you want to add a new value to it other than what shows up in the combo box, add it in the appropriate column in the sheet "Master Table". I have indexed remarks because often we label questions with standard tags, such as stumped, too long, attempt retry etc. Having an indexed field for the same will make it handy for analytics / filters. For other remarks you can always use remarks 2.

3. Use the Quant insights and verbal insights sheets for quant and verbal dashboard. They show the following:
  • Top reasons for failure
  • Weak topics : Top topics on which you commit mistakes. Will help you understand where you must focus
  • Errors over days : Plots errors made day wise. This may not be an accurate metric if you don't practice uniform number of problems over time, but might help.
  • Errors by difficulty : Share of errors graded by question difficulty. May not be useful if you're adding questions from sources other than gmatclub here.
  • Errors by problem type : Whether you must focus on SC/CR/RC/PS/DS.

4. There is an optional accuracy sheet that you could use. This will require the aggregate of number of problems that you solved each day in quant and verbal. Given this input, and the error data that we already have, the sheet will graph you your daily accuracy rate in Quant and Verbal. Ideally, this should be a positive slope line :-)

You could go one level further and get question details by topic for correct answers as well. But then, I realized that once the task of entering data into error log becomes cumbersome, you stop using it. So, wanted to keep the data entry part as minimal as possible. Even the accuracy part is completely up to individual's preference. But personally, I feel happy realizing that I've solved this many problems today, at the end of the day so thought I might as well keep track of it.

Please try this and let me know your feedback, especially issues.

and yea, press kudos if you liked it! Thanks :-D

Hey guys...made a couple changes / edits. First - had to change the dark red coloring and other formatting (was going for Harvard colors but I dont think it looks too good in excel). Second - needed to fix a formula. Third - created button to link to each source's performance report (before I dont think it was obvious that it was there). Fourth - created more tabs (reduced the default amount of questions from 2000 to 1000 to save space). Lastly, I made an xlsx version.

Enjoy.

BB - Any good news for us yet? Understand the work thing though.

In the spirit of collaboration now that the competition deadline has passed, I put together something which in my opinion takes some of the best features from each competitors log and aggregates it all into 1.

I have completed roughly half of it (only the quant side) and wanted to see what people thought before proceeding to code the verbal side as well.

Summary of New Error Log

1. I usually pride myself on being the best at making documents look pretty (former IBanker mentality) but Saruba by far had the best interface in my opinion. Great design and usability for the average person. So I grabbed a little bit of that.
2. Organizing the logs into quant/verbal made some sense to me. Mostly I liked how you had 2 logs and 2 corresponding reports. Another Saruba contribution that I borrowed.
3. Even though Spoilts Planner got bashed in a previous reply - I actually liked that feature. I know sometimes I like to set goals for myself as it pertains to the GMAT (i.e. how many questions per day, how long studying, when I take practice tests) and it helps to have it all rolled up into your error log.
4. The db I borrowed a bit from everyone.
5. I liked my highlighting tool. Helps me to quickly see the questions I need to review and spend more time on based on different criteria.

There are probably others to see but I'll leave a bit of mystery so you download it.

PS - 1 Hint. There is a lot of coding that can slow it down so i suggest turning your calcs to manual so it doesnt hinder your data entry and just press f9 whenever you need to calculate.

Hello Jasonlu1981 and GMATClub members,

I have updated the Spoilt Error Log V0.0.7 with timer functionality.
"TestGrid4GMAT_latest_version.xls" code was very complex and inefficient. I have used better, simple and efficient code.

To start timer you have to double click the 'Your Answer' Cell, select value and double click on 'OA' cell timer to stop. I can only attach 2 files in one post, so I have included snapshot in help page of the attached sheet. Try it !!!

Please don't hesitate if you need more help.

Changes:
1. Timer functionality included.
2. Updated Clear Log button. (button will be automatically deleted)

Hi,

Great work guys! I'm just starting to study for my GMAT and decided to use the first error log (friendly error log by Saruba). I have a couple of (stupid) questions:
- What is OA? Is that the correct answer?
- How do I actually use it? Each question that I get wrong I enter into the log and then review the appropriate areas in the last 2 weeks? There is no field for page number or w/e, so how do I record that?

Thanks!
