GMAT/GRE [#permalink] New post 12 Jun 2010, 08:25
Alex,

I have taken the GMAT and scored 770. Although I realize this a good score, I'm curious as to whether I can improve upon this. I wouldn't do so by retaking the GMAT, of course, but rather by furnishing GRE results. I will be taking that examination next week and, if my practice tests are any indication, should score 1580+ (one practice test was actually a perfect 1600). I am taking the GRE because I have been mulling a master degree in economics. Even though an MBA is preferable, I have studied for the GRE and see no harm in taking it anyways.

My questions, please:

1) Provided I score 1580+, would it be a good idea to send b-schools the GRE results in addition to the GMAT results?
2) Is there any concern that sending both results will lead the adcoms to question my sincerity about my desire for an MBA, esp. since the GRE will be taken over a year after the GMAT?
3) Is there any concern that sending both results will lead the adcoms to question my priorities by --- what could appear to be --- my attempt at trying to improve upon a 770?

Thank you for your time.

B-school admissions isn't a math competition.

A crappy score can handicap you, but a high score won't get you in. In fact, with the GMAT score you have, if you decide to submit a GRE score on top of that -- it can actually reflect negatively on you because the adcom will infer that you are a geek (and all the negative stereotypes that are associated with exam-obsessed folks -- socially inept, unable to work in teams, indecisive due to analysis-paralysis, and so forth -- all the traits that make a horrible manager or boss).

Thanks for the quick reply Alex. That was my concern exactly. One the one hand, it seems imprudent not to send very good GRE results but, at the same time, if they will not positively impact my chances (or worse, detract from them) it clearly makes no sense. The other option would be to submit the GRE results in place of those from the GMAT but I think taking the GMAT shows a certain commitment to b-school and, like you have mentioned elsewhere, test results don't matter once you reach a certain level. I am guessing you would feel a 770 GMAT and a 1580+ GRE are probably in the same boat so it makes most sense to stick with the former.
