I'll go with A.

My reasoning as to why B is wrong is that "dispute X and whether Y" can be read as 'dispute whether Y', which I believe is redundant.

(A) have not only disputed the common notion that Edgar Allan Poe drank to excess but also questioned whether he drank
Ok

(B) not only have disputed the common notion that Edgar Allan Poe drank to excess but also over whether he drank
but also over whether -> seems like verb is missing

(C) have disputed not only the common notion that Edgar Allan Poe drank to excess but also whether he may not have drunk

parellelism error

(D) not only have disputed the common notion that Edgar Allan Poe drank to excess but also questioned whether or not he had drunk

have questioned, drunk -wrong tense

(E) have disputed the common notion not only that Edgar Allan Poe drank to excess but also questioned whether he may not have drunk

not only improper use , drunk

Em, I think "A" as well, coz

(b) need a verb in later part
(c) whether....not.... / dispute ~ whether.....(seems not good)
(d) whether or not (redundancy)
(e) not parellel

The official answer is A.

Could someone elaborate on why (C) has a parallelism error, I fail to see it ....thanks :)

(C) is wrong at this part
"whether he may not have drunk"
whether gives two choices:
+ he drunk
+ he did not drink
the "may" is unnecessary
