Data obtained from the diagram:

Total students = 300
No of students of age 30 yrs or more = 110 + 50 = 160 (11 symbols in left circle + 5 in common area of the two circles)
No of students with no high school diploma = 40 + 50 = 90 (4 symbols in right circle + 5 in common area of the two circles)
No of students of age 30 yrs or more and no diploma = 50 (Common region of the two circles)
No of students of age 30 yrs or more with diploma = 110 (11 symbols in left circle)
No of students with no diploma but less than 30 yrs = 40 (4 symbols in right circle)

No of students less than 30 yrs = 300 - 160 = 140
No of students with a diploma = 300 - 90 = 210

No of students under 30 and with diploma = 100 (10 symbols outside the circles)

1.
No of students under 30 or with diploma = 140 + 210 - 100 = 250
Required probability = 250/300 = 5/6

2.
No of students under 30 and with diploma = 100
Required Probability = 100/300 = 1/3

Thanks Karishma for the detailed write up.
I'm through with the calculations, however, whats bothering me is the wording of Question A. How did you conclude that question A asks for No of Students under 30 or with diploma? whereas question says : Find number of students under 30 or high school diploma or both? Please enlighten me.

Thanks
H
