GMAT Prep1- 690:Quant- 49, Verbal-34 - Help needed in Verbal [#permalink] New post 17 Jun 2012, 05:55
Hi All,

I took old GMAT Prep 1 today and got 690 (Quant-49, Verbal-34). This is my first test since I started GMAT prep. Sorry for the following long post but I am tensed after having a dismal outing in verbal section and overall test .

Quant Section:

As I didn't practice much in DS and geometry questions and couldn't plan my time distribution in Quant section, the score was not as per expectation. I was forced to guesstimate answers for questions near the end of test which reflected on my score.
Overall accuracy - 37 Correct, 9 Wrong.
Distribution of wrong questions - In the last set of questions(30-33,36-37), I ended up doing 6 questions wrong with 2 questions correct in between.
I am planning to devote more time in DS questions and time management to do well in this section.

Verbal

In the test I was fatigued and finished Verbal section 17 mins before time.
Overall Accuracy - 27 Correct, 14 Wrong - CR(3), RC(5), SC(6).
Distribution of wrong questions- 2 SC wrong in a row (4th and 5th ques), 2 CR and 1 SC in a row (9-12), one RC with 3 ques(15-17), 2 SC (31-32)
I have completed CR Bible and Manhattan SC guide (once) while practicing questions from OG12 and Verbal Review 2nd edition. I didn't go through any prep material for RC and practiced ~40 ques from OG 12 (starting from the end )with ~79% accuracy. Also for CR I practiced ~90 ques from OG 12 with ~90% accuracy.
SC has been a problem area for me and it seems like I am unable to improve in it even though I went through theory portion of Manhattan SC guide twice.

I am planning to take GMAT by August'12 and my target score is 760. I feel the target score is pretty steep with my low accuracy in Verbal and time management issues in Quant . :(

Kindly suggest how I should plan and work for next 2 months.

Did you find questions in the test which you had seen earlier? If not, your score and timing in verbal seem to be very good and you can definitely improve it. Please practice more OG stuff and you will see the benefits.

@ mahajanakhil1985: I did see questions from OG, but as I didn't remember answers to them I couldn't leverage from these questions. Also, most of the SC questions which went wrong in the test were from OG itself

You seem to be doing well. I also scored 700 in Prep 1 but I saw around 6-7 questions which I had already solved during practice. So, even if you did not remember answers to the questions which you had seen already, you sub-conscious mind might have remembered them. I will say that you take mocks so that you can have a fair idea of where you stand in verbal section. I took mocks of MGMAT and as per my experience, they show inflated score in verbal section. You get 14 questions wrong in them and your score will still be around 38. I understand that it is the level of question which we get wrong affects our score, but still I didn't find MGMAT's verbal section's scoring criterion credible. I ended up getting 25 in verbal in GMAT, my score was 600 (Q48, V25) :(.

Don't let the simplicity of this response fool you: read an American newspaper every day. It helps you in all 3 parts of Verbal. The GMAT tests the grammar you find in the newspaper, tests what information is contained in a passage, and tests your ability to zoom in on specific parts of an argument (every article in the newspaper is an argument whether you notice it or not). Read the newspaper every day and it will help you more than you think.

Hi,

Ron videos were helpful on approaching RC's especially Inference based questions. I have started out practicing RC's using the techniques mentioned in the video's.
Can anyone recommend any video/ material for CR as well? Although I have done CR bible, I feel it is too vast. For revising or aiming for accuracy in difficult CR questions it will be helpful if I have concise theory/practice materials.
Also, I am doing SC's from OG-12 and 13 while looking up explanations from Aristotle's - Ultimate one minute explanation guide. Is it the right approach to improve accuracy in SC's?

Regards,
