GMAT Scores

My response was more for the whole "do you think this is worth a phone call to the GMAT folks on this" thing. It probably isn't, because your official score report will always have the latest percentile data. The ESR percentiles are not relevant from an admissions perspective. I'd just drop them an email asking them to look into this, but it's too much to hope that they'll raise that 91 to a 92 in the official score report

Hmmm that was weird. Was just on the GMAC site and was presented with a new webpage where the percentiles are... This web page had tabs for each section of the GMAT (ie. you click on Verbal tab to see the verbal percentiles table). The percentiles had changed, 710 is now 92 and 44 is now 58. I then navigated away from the webpage but returned to it a moment later and it had reverted back to the current percentiles list where all percentile charts are on one page... Hm.

Anyway I think GMAC is in the process of updating the percentiles right now, a webmaster is probably making changes.

Just saw this on mba site.
Verbal and Quantitative scores range from 0 to 60; scores below 9 and above 44 for the Verbal section and below 7 and above 50 for the Quantitative section are rare.
Is the scoring range changed from 0-51 to 0-60?
Does this change mean anything to test takers?

That's interesting. I normally look at the percentiles on this page.

You have a very strong score, and whatever the mba.com website people are doing can't change that

No. The GMAC in fact has asked test prep companies not to entertain applications (for instructor positions) from anyone claiming to have a 52 on either quant or verbal. And not because they didn't want the highest scorers helping others

If anything changes, you can be sure that the GMAC will send out adequate communication, and that the process will take quite some time (it won't be sudden). Standardized tests have to ensure that there is little to no confusion as regards scoring among either schools or test takers. For example, we were informed about the pilot program for switching the order of sections 2-3 years back (not the exact timelines, but the general direction).

What I was saying was that earlier today, on that same url / webpage you posted, a new set of percentile tables were posted along with a different format, then 5 minutes later the webpage had reverted back to what you are seeing now. Anyway fingers crossed.

Are you trying to intend that the text on mbadotcom is incorrect?
Even the new version GMATPrep is giving scores in range of 0-60 for both Quant and Verbal.

Funnily enough, the GMAC people said they've been trying to get that changed on mba.com, especially the 51-60 that is there in the quant percentile table. They also said that they have no plans to open the scoring scale up beyond 51 (although theoretically the possibility exists).

Keep an eye on mba.com if you want, but it's extremely unlikely that they've changed the scale.

I'm trying to figure out what percentiles Q48 V42 and Q48 V41 would equate to today, overall and by section. I got these scores on GMATprep practice tests recently but have heard that the GMATprep scoring algorithm is from 2012.

Does anyone have any idea? Or is it too difficult to discern overall score - due to separate overall grading? Many thanks

Update: the GMAC has again confirmed to us that the scale remains the same. We've requested them to update the information on mba.com.

The scaled score is an approximate measure of your ability level (as measured by the GMAT). The GMAT assigns a percentile to each scaled score on the basis of how common that score was in the 3 year (rolling) period before the current testing year.

But still i am not getting the point of scaled score? like is it the total marks obtained or it is the total number of questions got right ? how it is created or calculated ?

It's an equated score to make up for the difference in overall difficulty levels of the questions each test taker is given.

GMAC has released their annual update to the GMAT percentiles.
Attached is the new distribution.

It is not much different from last year's and neither are the trends:

There is some shift in mid-600 overall score percentiles by a point (e.g. 630 used to be 70th percentile and now it is 69th).

The Quant has inflated the most. Now Q49 is 77th percentile vs 78th in 2015 and Q48 is 71st vs 73rd in 2015.

Verbal test-taking volume has had some very minor impacts and caused a deflation (e.g. V36 is now 81st percentile instead of 80th in 2015).

As usual, nothing we can really do and no changes or implication to the strategy/etc. At GMAT Club, we will be updating the percentiles to match the new values, but this has no impact on the overall GMAT score, just some personal pride and standing.

I see the attachment is from 2012. Does the matrix change over time? I tried to google and found that V51 was 97 percentile. Also, I got a V24 in my previous GMAT attempt and my score report said 37 percentile but as per this sheet it should have been lower than 36 percentile.

Can you please clarify?

So I got a 740 (Q48, V45) this morning and every chart I can find has that combination listed as a 750. In fact, in most of them it looks like with a Q47, V45 I would have gotten a 750 as well.

Why does my scoring appear to be lower?

Apologies if I'm missing something. It was my understanding that although percentile rankings may change, the total score based on your subsection scores remains the same.

First - congratulations!
Second, there is an explanation - the tables are not exactly precise, and that is because the final score (e.g. 740) is not a byproduct of the scaled scores (47, 45) but rather the total and the scaled scores are arrived to using separate algorithms, and since the GMAT score is reported in increments of 10's there is an inconsistency.

Ah, okay. That makes sense (sort of)! A 750 would inflate my ego a bit but I just wanted to make sure everything was correct. Thank you for the explanation and well wishes!
