B seems best : Shankar’s musical career began in an unpromising group as
we need "Shankar’s musical career" --->for it is the career that extended for 40 years ---eliminate A and D
E is awkward --->"ravi the career of Shankar"
also parallelism is perfect in B

The sentence opens up with a modifier, followed by "Ravi". We know that Ravi himself doesn't extend more than forty years -- that's nonsensical. For this reason, we can eliminate answers A and D.

Answer E probably doesn't need an explanation but I'll give one anyway. "Ravi the career of Shankar" is nonsensical as well.

Now we are down to B and C. The opening modifier in both of these answer choices correctly refer to Ravi's CAREER instead of Ravi himself. Answer choice C uses the phrase "group of being" which is incorrect -- Preposition + NOUN + VERB(ing) is wrong 99% of the time. The only time when Preposition + NOUN + VERB(ing) is correct is when the preposition refers directly to the noun. To any native speakers here, this entire sentence just doesn't sound right to the ear either :P

Now that we've eliminated A, C, D, and E, we have our answer: B

the rule that u have stated cannot be applied here : "group of being"is not Preposition + NOUN + VERB(ing)

i have a picture of my brother playing football --->" of my brother playing " is a prep +noun +verbing construction (correct sentence)
i have never heard of bees' stinging dogs ----->"of bees' stinging" is a "prep +noun +verbing construction" (wrong sentence)

Oh I come to know about this contest now ... :( though my take is B for the obvious reasons

(A) Shankar began his musical career in an unpromising group as ... wrong modifier Ravi Shankar can't be extended for 40 years.
(B) Shankar’s musical career began in an unpromising group as ... This is correct also began in is appropriate usage.
(C) Shankar’s musical career began with the unpromising group of being ... usage of being is not correct. Being is correct only when its used as verb to convey the state of being.
(D) Shankar had begun his musical career with the unpromising group of being .. Wrong as explained above
(E) the career of Shankar has begun with an unpromising group of .... has is not appropriate as we use present perfect tense in GMAT only to convey two past events.
