cr = x a^2 (1/b) where x is a constant

since new cr = old cr

x (y^2) (1/2b) = x a^2 (1/b)
(y^2) (1/2) = a^2
y^2 = 2 a^2
y = sqrt(2) a
y = 1.4 a
so a has to increase by 40%.
