0% (00:00) correct 0% (00:00) wrong based on 0 sessions
I simplified question stem and arrived to:

Is X = 3?

1. I can't see why X !=3 is not sufficient
2. I can't understand (2)...

thanks ,Guy

For any x ---> sqrt(x^2) = |x|

so you are being asked:

is |x-3| = 3-x ?

this will be true when x=3 or x<=0

statement 1

insufficient

statement 2

this will tells you that x is negative since |x| is positive and -(-n) is positive.

sufficient

the answer is (B)

From 1, x could be > or < 3.
from 2, x is only -ve. so it is suficient to answer than the equation holds true.

KillerSquirrel isn't the formula true for every x<=3 ? [#permalink] New post 11 Nov 2007, 09:34

KillerSquirrel, from my calculations i gather that the formula is true for every x<=3.

(try x=3, x=2,x=1, x=0), it still means you are correct of course.
the OA is B.

please tell me how did you arrive to those values, perhaps it's my bad.

i'll be happy to know in general how you solve absolute values questions.

thanks Guy :oops:

Of course you are right ---> x <= 3

But this dosen't change the answer since x<0 is still in the range and x <> 3 can be anything (i.e 4 ---> out of range).
