Going for the Gold - Chasing the 760 - A New Quest [#permalink]

Going for the Gold - Chasing the 760 - A New Quest Dear Members, The journey to break through the 700 barrier culminated in a bittersweet experience. On one hand, I achieved my target score (T: 710 Q: 48 and V: 40) but on the other hand, I realized that I cannot meet the deadlines for the last round of intake for Fall '11. Thus, I plan to apply to programs beginning in Fall '12. The deadlines for the 1st round of intake would be in the month of October. So I have a lot of time at hand - nearly 8 months! With my present credentials and a GMAT score of 710, I can probably secure a seat in one of the many B-schools which fall in the near-elite to elite category. However, if I can boost my score of 710 to a +760 and add to my work experience (while simultaneously working on my extra-curricular activities) , I can actually aim for ultra-elite B-schools such as Harvard, Booth, Stanford etc. Taking into consideration the above factors, I have decided to take on a new quest - a quest to surpass the 760 barrier! This post marks the beginning of that Journey. Wish me luck. Thanks and Regards, Entwistle

That's the spirit man - go for it. You can clearly add 2-3 points in Q as 48 is still in 80 percentiles, not the true reflection for an engineer like yourself. Real challenge would probably be to add 3-4 points in verbal, but it has been done before, so - go for it.

wow, good luck. Through your last journey thread it seems like you went through all the recommend materials ( MGMAT Guides and OG). What are you going to use this time? Any change in strategy?

Any change in strategy? Yes The primary changes are: 1. I'm going to use the book "Quantum CAT" to prepare for the quantitative part. This book is strictly meant for advance level students. It's the recommended study guide for an exam called the Common Aptitude Test (CAT). The quantitative part of CAT is unbelievably tougher than the quantitative part of GMAT. I will also use the GMAT Club Tests to consolidate my mathematical skills 2. For verbal, I'm going to use the book " Doing Grammar" to help me with the sentence correction and stick to the Manhattan book for CR (I might switch to the Power Score LSAT Logical Reasoning guide... haven't made up my mind yet)... For RC, I will do LSAT RC Passages for practice. 3. Instead of working on the weak areas alone, I will work on each area from scratch. What I mean by this is that I will not consider any particular area to be my strength or any particular area to be my weakness. I shall post the skeletal plan in a while

I definitely recommend PowerScore CR Bible. It's a really enjoyable read and you will learn a lot from it!

But quant is my first priority Strategy for Quant is: 1. Go through "Quantum CAT" thoroughly. (a month and a half) 2. Do the GMAT Club Tests and review them thoroughly. (a month) 3. Do a fixed number of problems from the OG on a daily basis. (remaining time)

Entwistle, I LOVE your enthusiasm and optimism. I have no words here except BEST OF LUCK On a separate note, some schools have spring admissions and you could look into spring admissions. May be you can apply with your current score(and your score is DEFINITELY competitive ).

Thank you for all your support people! :D UPDATE: I was interviewed, this morning, by the Course Director of one of the GMAT Coaching institutes in my city. The interview went well and I've been asked to conduct a DEMO class this Thursday. There's a good chance of them offering me a job! This way, I can revise what I've learned as I teach the concepts to students and I can also add to my work ex! The biggest benefit is that I'd be able to help others in their journey to do well in the GMAT and get to their dream B-school... Wooooooooohooooooooo ~\m/~

Anyway, the pay is not that great But I'm living with my parents right now and I have my own vehicle. So I don't mind the low pay. I'm taking the job because to teach the students, I would automatically be compelled to learn more
