Good GMAT score but poor AWA score [#permalink] New post 29 Mar 2014, 01:38
Hi all

I recently gave my GMAT and scored 740 (50Q, 40V). I scored 7/8 on IR but managed just 4/6 on AWA. I was curious to know whether low AWA score will have a negative impact on my applications?

Thanks in advance.

First off -- great score in the area that matters most. I found this link -- http://www.mba.com/us/the-gmat-exam/gma ... -mean.aspx -- your AWA score is slightly below the mean. It's low, but I don't think it's enough to keep you out anywhere. Just make sure you write high-quality admissions essays and you'll be fine.

Good luck!

Hey there RB3007,

Amazing GMAT score - well done!! As Brian mentioned, it is a little on the lower side but definitely not a big deal. The AWA score is directional indicator at best. It's the part of the exam that's open to a slight degree of subjectivism and, if your essays are great and communicate what you're trying to say, hardly the end of the world. Also, it's not reported. So does it give the adcom a data point? Sure. But is that data point reported? Does it impact rankings? Nope. So definitely don't worry about it - and definitely don't retake the exam.

You did incredibly well - go enjoy it :)

Thanks! Glad to have experts replying to my query! Definitely relieved to know that I don't have to retake GMAT just because of AWA.

Hi there, I got the same total score 740 (Q49 V41) but received 3.5 in AWA. Could you please tell if that can hurt my application for S16? Thank you so much.

Hi there,

First off - CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Sometimes folks on this forum get so caught up in the details they don't take the time to enjoy the good news. YOU HAVE AN AWESOME SCORE! Well done mate!

As to your AWA, it might be a flag at the top 5 or so (because they can be picky when it comes to the admissions process) but overall at the top 16, it shouldn't be the reason you don't get in. As I mentioned above, it isn't reported, so they don't care TOO much. But it is something they look at. You can remedy it with a really strong set of essays - clear, concise, well-written, and engaging.

Don't sweat it too much though - you have the GMAT score, now it's time to get to work on those apps!

Congrats again,

Bhavik
