grammar help - usage of would [#permalink] New post 30 Aug 2008, 09:48
I would like to apologize beforehand if my question below seems naive. But i need some documentation or help on the usage of "would".

One eg question where the choice of "would" is incorrect brought this question to me. I have mentioned it below.
My question : When will you use "would".
----------------
ALTHOUGH SOME PARENTS BELIEVE THAT THE LOCAL ALL-GIRLS SCHOOL SHOULD BEGIN TO ADMIT BOYS, OTHERS CLAIM THAT GIRLS WOULD PARTICIPATE ACTIVELY IN CLASS ONLY IF THEY HAD ALL-GIRLS CLASSES.
I will list the 2 choices that i need clarity on.
1- that girls would participate actively only in a class that were all-girls.
2 - that girls will only participate actively in an all-girls class.

Ans is : 2
----------------
Another eg:
While some academicians believe that business ethics should be integrated into every business course, others say that students will take ethics seriously only if it would be taught as a separately required course.
Correct answer choice was : only if it is taught as a separate, required course
Explanation is : "x will happen if y happens"
The verb of the main clause should be in the future tense and the verb of the if clause should be in the present indicative.
----------------
Basically how can i conclude that would is not correct here or in other sentences in general.
Any help/docs would be appreciated.

One golden rule with conditional if is "would/could" will not appear in the if clause.

If clause in present tense, the conditional clause is in the form of "will + base verb"

If clause in past tense, the conditional clause is in the form of " Would/Could + base verb "

If clause in past perfect tense, the conditional clause is in the form of "Would/Could + have + past participle

I guess the second one is clear to you on the basis of the golden rule. I request you to post the Q 1 with all answer choices.
