The new house looks as great as I had hoped.

I read this off someone else's GMAT notes. It seems the sentence is a bad example for the use of the as...as idiom.. Advise please...

You're right. The sentence seems a bit awkward. But gramatically it is correct.

The new house looks as great as I had hoped (it would be).

How's this: The new house looks as beautiful as I had hoped.
