How far is Chicago (to/for) you ?

Could someone explain the grammar behind the usage.

I must be in trouble, because neither sounds great to me! I think I'd say something like, "How far is Chicago from you?"

Where did your example come from? Are we 100% certain that either "to" or "for" is grammatically correct?
