Issue task:
A nation should required all its students to study the same curriculum until they enter college.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation.
Response:
Primary and secondary education set the foundation of the future of every child. These are the levels where the students learn morals, writing skills, reading skills, basic science and arts. There are some subjects which some schools think pointless, which are very important for the students’ personality such as civics and ethics, history and geography. The only way for a nation to ensure that its students all have these basics, is to enforce a common national curriculum.
A national curriculum is created by intellectuals in the educational sector. Great professors in the educational sector analyze the fundamental subjects which every child is supposed to have a mastery of and based on their own experiences and the state of the nation, they come up with a well-structured common national curriculum for their students. This curriculum will not only set the foundation as stated in the introduction but will also give them a lucid picture of what they should study in college. How will a student determine his field of study if his secondary institution structures his curriculum to be arts-inclined?
Secondly, a national curriculum is planned based on the problems of that nation. I remember our curriculum back in the days never had computer science because Cameroon was an under developed country by then and the leaders didn’t even think technology, they relied on the paper base system which only became faulty in the 20th century. Now based on the advantages of the digital world, Computer science has been included in the nation’s curriculum.
Thirdly, the implementation of a common national curriculum before college is significantly affected by the team which creates the curriculum. As I stated above, it should be made up of intellectuals. I also think it should be made up of the young generation as well. For instance, swimming is not part of the national curriculum of Cameroon because the curriculum is created by old intellectuals who don’t see the important of swimming but yet many of our citizens drown every day in foreign countries. Intellectuals of this century know the importance of swimming and other social activities in the lives of the students.
Therefore with all the above points , I encourage the implementation of a common national curriculum for secondary and primary education in order to instill into the students the fundamentals which they need in order to pursue their dreams or college education.
