H1B to F1 with I485 applied ? [#permalink]

OK, I am sorry to use this as an immigration portal, but it's not easy to find other people in this boat anywhere else. With the recent developments, all of internationals who were stuck waiting for their priority dates are now free to apply for AOS. My question is:
- Am currently on my H1, and there is still an year before I will need my F1 (class of '10), if my AOS is not approved until then, what is my status ..? Do I even need to apply for an F1 to study further ?
