Haas Essay Questions

Writing the outline to my Haas essays... encountered 2 questions:

1. For "Who do you want to invite to dinner?" I picked a famous sports star for his goal setting and determination qualities (among others), and it links to my extracurricular passion (which I discuss in the greatest accomplishment) answer. Are there any downsides to picking a sports icon for this instead of the standard Oprah, Albright, Madonna?

2. None of the Haas essay questions allow you to talk about your community service/volunteering experience IF you were not in a LEADERSHIP position for those activities. I have enough info to fill all my essays, and I touch upon all the themes I wanted to talk about, but I don't know where I would put my volunteering stuff, since I was more of a participant than a leader in those situations. I don't think they'll fit well in the Why MBA essay either. Anyone else have this problem? will it be enough just to have it in the "List of Activities" section for Haas?

while I put on my dancing shoes - I will take a pick at question 1.

Always show a contrast - you probably wrote a ton of stuff regarding your prof. goals, so definitely a sports star is a good approach.

Better yet, use more examples like that to showcase your personal qualities. I dont know who your other dinner mates are, but I strongly believe in displaying your personal attributes and linking them to people u choose coz questions like these allow you to show ur true self and make u stand apart from the rest who use gandhi, luther king, buddha, etc (not that these dudes are riff raff, more power to them, but they are too often used like the line 'I want to bring world peace' in a miss universe contest)

Answered Question #2 for myself, but you can use the optional essay (500 words! woohoo!) to talk about community service. This has been validated by Montauk and Bodine's book. You just have to be sure that it ADDs to your application and you're not just writing for writing's sake.

My community service, while not at the level of creating orphanages in Kazahkstan, shows the type of work that I like to do (my passion) and proves my consistency in doing it over the past 7 years (not a transparent thing to get points for b-school)... Thus I want to talk about it.

These "who would you invite to dinner" questions are such BS. Everyone always lies!!! Madeline Albright, yeah right! If most guys were to answer this truthfully, it'll probably be Jenna Jameson or some other hot, nasty porn star, since you never know what might happen afterwards. I think a sports star is a good idea because it is actually believable unlike Albright , Jesus, or any of the founding fathers.

thanks Lich...hahahah Jenna Jameson... LOL! I would pay to read the essay of anyone who dares to submit an essay saying they would invite Jenna Jameson and make it a really good reason... like her drive to succeed and her ability to shrug off criticism by people... ;)

Personally I don't think my wife would appreciate me inviting someone like Jenna Jameson for dinner. If I were answering this I would pick someone who fascinates me intellectually not someone who I think is cool and impresses me. As a Patriots fan Tom Brady would be awesome to have over for dinner since he is an amazing individual who went from a late round draft pick and back-up QB to the gold standard of the NFL by hard work and of course a little good fortune. However, Bill Belichick would be provide much more interesting dinner conversation.
