Half of the company's employees work in manufacturing. 20% of the employees who do not work in manufacturing are women. What percent of the company's employees are men?

1. 50% of the company's male employees work in manufacturing
2. 20% of the company's employees who work in manufacturing are women

In DS two statements never contradict.

The problem is that for statement 2 solutions is not right.

Stem: consider total # of employees to be 100. We know that 50 are in manufacturing and 50 are not in manufacturing. From the 50 which are not in manufacturing, 40 are men.

(2) 20% of the company's employees who work in manufacturing are women. --> 40 (80%*50=40) are men in manufacturing. So total men 40+40=80, which is 80% of 100.

Company employees = E
No. of working in manufacturing = 0.5E

Let no. of males are M and females are F.
therefore M+F = E

Female working manufacturing = F1
Female not working manufacturing= F2 = 0.2 x 0.5E = 0.1E
therefore F1 + F2 = F = F1 + 0.1E

Male working manufacturing = M1
Male not working manufacturing = M2 = 0.4E
therefore M1+M2=M=M1+0.4E

Statement 1. 50% of the company's male employees work in manufacturing
implies M1 = 0.5M
0.5M + M2 = M
= M2 = 0.5M = 0.4E
therefore M = 0.8E
80% of total company employees are male

Statement 2. 20% of the company's employees who work in manufacturing are women
F1 = 0.2E
F = 0.2E + 0.1E
= 0.3E
therefore no. of males = 0.7E
70% of total company employees are male .

got it! good example. I misread the following part:

20% of the company's employees who work in manufacturing are women

Lesson Learned: Read the question properly and you save yourself a lot of frustration

Also, I'm using a double set matrix for this kind of problems for quite some time... that really increased my accuracy and timing on set problems... so if someone has trouble with this kind of problems, look into this concept!
