1/3
2/5
3/7
1/2
4/7

First notice the number of months for which he worked - March to Sept i.e. 7 months

Avg of monthly totals in tips for months other than August = x
Tips in August = 3x

Total tips for all months = 6*x + 3x = 9x

Tips for August/Total tips for all months = 3x/9x = 1/3

We're told that Harold works at a resort from the beginning of March to the end of September and that during the month of August he made 3 times the average (arithmetic mean) of his monthly totals in tips for the OTHER months. We're asked for the fraction of his TOTAL tips that his August tips represented. Let's TEST$1 per month for all of the months EXCEPT August. That means he made (3)($1) =$3 in August:

March: $1 April:$1
May: $1 June:$1
July: $1 August:$3
September: $1 Total =$9

August/Total = $3/$9 = 1/3
