Hey, so I was one of the lucky/blessed ones that got an interview. My friend (who's currently going to Harvard) recommended using HBS guru, does anyone have any experience with them?

Hi, I just got the invite today, kind of surprised as I was told that I was too old for HBS (I'm 31).

I live in Brazil and while I know that HBS says that interviewing off-campus doesn't hurt your chances, do you guys think that doing an on-campus interview might in some way increase the odds of being accepted?

Thanks!

Out of curiosity, do you have anything on record by a person at Harvard saying explicitely that you're "too old?" In the US, that's age discrimination, and if you have it in writing, you have quite a case (although after that, I presume that you wouldn't want to go to Harvard, but if you'd like to give them quite a black eye, I would go for it.) (Note: I'm not applying to Harvard).

See my post a few pages back. The median age at HBS is pretty low because the median age of applicants is pretty low, not because they discriminate against older students. There's just not that many applicants to full-time MBA programs who are past the age of 30, because at your Goldman/McKinsey/Google-type companies the top performers are heading to business school 2-4 years after finishing undergrad. But I'm 31 and off the top of my head I can think of at least 15-20 classmates who are older than me, from both traditional and non-traditional backgrounds. There's even one guy in my class who's in his late 50s or early 60s.

Hello woofbearus

I had my interview on campus last Friday, and everybody I have spoken to so far have said that the interview was casual and personalized and went well overall. I don't know how 50% of the interviewees will be rejected. Fingers crossed!

query007,

That's fair enough. I think perhaps the takeaway is that HBS will always do a good job getting to know you in the interview (thus the casual interview that "goes well"), and will decide based on how much they like your story versus how well you were able to convey it? I guess that makes sense?

It could also be that people who didn't have their HBS interviews go well aren't as likely to share this information? So we are seeing some selection bias. In any case, the finger crossing seems useful!

Hmmmm, they interview sorta 1800 people and admit 1000 which gets boiled down to an entering class of 910-25 or so (yield is 90 pct). So post interview odds are 1800/1000. People screw up interviews by talking too much and getting lost, not sounding lively or confident, rubbing the interveiwer the wrong way, or just not being a person they feel for a variety of subjective reasons would thrive in case method environment. You can leave interview feeling that it went well and still flunk for those reasons. Dee Leopold will accept, on a hit or miss basis, phone calls from kids who were interviewed and dinged, and sometimes hints at why you got dinged--I have spoken to over 20 of those kids AFTER they have spoken to Dee. Most common interview screw up is that interviewer thought you sounded 'scripted' that is Dee's word. What it means is that you were 1. actually over scripted. 2. Not sure of your answers, and trying to say what you thought they might like to hear. And many variants of that, where answers are not flowing, internalized, and honest sounding (they dont care if they are honest, this is business school, after all). Scripted is a catch-all phrase --it includes BS, lack of flowing speech (regardless of content), insincere sounding or just stupid answers. As noted, you can leave interview feeling that it went well and still flunk for those reasons.
Sometimes interview goes OK and you get dinged anyway--you basically lose out in a beauty contest to other kids in your cohort (e.g. other bankers, other consultants, other military, other engineers). "We just liked other applicants more than you . . ." is a famous adcom remark, and unlike many other adcom remarks, this remark is often true.

Dee is a good interviewer and a fair one, and it sounds like you did fine. She is also pretty good at playing it close to the vest, so it could be harder to tell. All that said, flowing conversation is good sign. Did she ask you what books you like or are reading?-- famous Dee question, she is big reader.

Yes. In fact, I am a big science-fiction/fantasy lover and Dee said that she didn't like the genre and to recommend her something that would change her mind. I talked about a fantasy book derived from an African folktale which explored human reaction to power and chaos, as well as a sci-fi book which imagines a future devoid of oil and ravaged by environmental disasters as a cautionary tale for the consequences of, in this case, corporate shortsightedness. So basically I gave it the old college try to change her mind. :)

Hey guys - curious whether all admits in R1 were announced on the same day or were they staggered? I probably should stop thinking about all this till March 27th

All notifications go out on the same day at the same time. So, I suggest blocking your work calendar now for 27-Mar from 11:30 onward. I was a MESS starting around 11:30 and tried everything to keep from focusing on my computer. The email came at 12:00 on the dot and I was so excited that I was literally all over the place (that, and I opened a bottle of champagne). I am very happy that I was able to work from home and that I did not have any meetings for the rest of the afternoon.

For anybody that has gotten accepted, how soon does HBS provide a financial aid package regarding need-based fellowships/grants?

They opened the application at the beginning of Feb and decisions take 3-5 weeks after application - meaning I don't know if anyone from R1 has heard back yet.

I heard back on my aid package! It was very fast and I even had some questions / additional information to include. Still fast and very easy. Now to finding a loan...

How is the student contribution determined, are you expected to put in your entire savings?

It is not that I do not want to answer, but I think this is highly dependent on your personal situation. Once admitted, there is a lot of information on how they calculate your contribution + HBS aid + loan.

I will be honest and say that I wasn't expecting very much (I've had a decent to good salary and saved a good amount over the years) but I did receive HBS funding. So, while I need a loan and my contribution is higher than I would have hoped, I feel like the HBS aid is free money that I wasn't expecting. So - in the end - very happy.

Interviewed today in Shanghai. The adcom member did an excellent job making me feel very comfortable, and the 30min (actually ended up being 40!) absolutely flew by. Almost the entire conversation was centered around my job, but there was a question along the lines of "Is there anything we haven't discussed yet that you'd like to bring up?" where I was able to mention my Why MBA / Why Harvard, (which I thought was also pretty brief on my application too). Finishing up my Post-Interview Reflection, and then the waiting game continues!

Anyone else waiting for both Harvard and Stanford? Wednesday is going to be a hard day.

Anyone have a sense of what your odds are if you've interviewed at both? Here is my math: If both schools are 50/50 that means overall assuming independence we have a 75% chance of getting into one of the two schools. But not sure if there is an actual data point out there.

I don't really think that is a safe assumption to make. I'd imagine those that get admitted to one are more likely to get admitted to the other. A really good profile is going to be a really good profile at both schools -- as will a bad remain a bad.

I'm waiting for Harvard, Stanford, and Wharton this week... though from what I hear, we get a call Tuesday from Stanford if we're in (same day as Wharton) but if we don't hear, we'll get the online update for ding or WL on Wednesday. HBS is all online at noon. So for me Tuesday begins the terror, and will be over Wednesday at noon.

As for odds... I have lots of people in my life trying to make me play the "Harvard or Stanford" game, and its really not fun. I want to be confident that one of them will take me, but its really out of my hands at this point.

Can we just pretend like the 75% chance is a real thing and leave it at that? 50 more hours...

For those who received their admit in R1. How does the letter you receive online start off with? With "Congratulations!"

Just want to prepare myself for that first millisecond when I open the decision letter. If I don't see the key word or phrase used in admit letters, I'll know I'm finished.

A gracious R1 admit shared the following first line of his/her acceptance letter:

"On behalf of Harvard Business School, it is a pleasure and a privilege to offer you a place in the MBA Class of 2015."

I heard it was only two... so not looking so good

As a point of reference, there are currently 466 members in the private HBS 2015 group on facebook.

Bear in mind that that number includes R1/2+2/joint degree as well as a few HBS 2014 folks (who have joined to post listings for roommates and surveys for their FIELD projects) and a few turncoats who turned down HBS for other schools but haven't left the group yet.
