Re: Has anyone scored 800 in gmat? [#permalink]

I ended up scoring 760... however my impression is that once you've got over 750, there's no real benefit to getting a higher score, and in fact it could damage your application - it could act as a red-flag to the admissions committee, making them wonder if you are a one-dimensional person with a fairly narrow range of life experiences (as has been suggested above).
Really, once you've nailed the mid-700's, you've got a good enough score on the GMAT for the admissions committee to 'tick the box' and move on to the other areas of the application.

Just a thought - May be those scoring 800 get a little over-confident about getting the admit and hence neglect other aspects of application (like essays ). Long time lurker here... I think the more likely issue in most cases is that the GMAT is only important to a point--it's critical to reach your school's minimum acceptable threshold for GMAT scores (whatever that might be), but there's not a ton of value in exceeding that threshold. Based on my experience, once you're in the range of GMAT scores for applicants they'd realistically consider, other factors become much more important for determining whether you'll actually get in. In my case, I scored 780, and I got the el rejecto from one top 10 school, while I got wait listed by another top 10. My u-grad GPA was good, too, I certainly wasn't overconfident in my applications, and I'm not a one-dimensional robot type. What seems to have sunk me, though, is that I'm a little older and my work experience isn't super impressive. In the end, I think that those two things were a hell of a lot more important than my numbers. In any case, I did get into a couple of 30- to 40-range schools with full scholarships. The high GMAT score probably played a pretty significant role in the scholarship decision, but I'm guessing I would have still been accepted (prob w/less money) at those two schools if my GMAT score had been 80 points lower.

Well, I can't remember where I read it, perhaps one of Sandy's threads on Business Week before that site went by the wayside, but somebody (very authoritative I know) said that an 800 throws up a red flag at Stanford. The 800s mostly bombed the interview because their 800 was a function of their relative weirdness, which came out in the interview.
Though I haven't yet applied to schools (I am this fall), it appears as though you just need to check the proverbial box with the GMAT. You just need to demonstrate that you're smart enough, not the smartest person in the world. Over and above is nice, and helps with scholarships and potentially getting the initial interview, but by and large GMAT scores take on this uber-significance because they are the only metric that each candidate has in common. Unlike law school admissions, which are just a raw numbers game (LSAT + GPA = your chances), business schools appear much more holistic. Through some unscientific formula, ADCOMs are giving points for your undergrad if it's an exclusive one, the selectivity of jobs you have, performance, extras, etc.

My buddy's roommate at HBS was an 800 GMAT guy. They graduated a few years ago. He said he was just naturally brilliant and pretty much coasted through school.

My cousin attended HBS with a 790. He still tells me he could have got a perfect score and he probably would if he wrote it a second time. He 'messed up' the V section... he says... lol
No matter what people say about astronomical GMAT scores - its a sign of nerdiness, a possible indicator of imbalanced social skills etc... I just think 800 is an incredible achievement no matter what.
More power to those who can get that score. If this world was completely fair and objective and only reliant on pure cold, calculating technical skills, 800 GMATs would rule this world!

Yes!!!! I did!!!!!
For Quants the last questions was a DS one for programming a space rocket to fly using only the math tools of linear algebra and the weighted average theorem.( I think that the NASA people do not know this cut through solution for their job. . . )
And for verbal section the last question was the below CR question:
Yes or no??
a) Yes. b) No. C) Maybe. D) Yes, if in the case that I had knew the whole discussion I would have answered Yes. E No, if in the case that I had knew the whole discussion I would have answered No.
After answering the last question the computer started smoking . .and a Matrix like code started showing on my screen and finally the score appeared after 1 minute. Then the supervisor of the test centre started setting up the printer in order to be able to print the digit 8 in the first place of the score. .( it was not necessary up until then . . . )
By arriving home I got an e-mail from the PhD of HBS assuring me that I have a place in their 2013 class. I rejected the offer because I wanted a MBA degree instead . .
