Hi guys,

I sat the GMAT last month and came across a SC question where I wasnt too sure whether I should use 'have' or 'has'.

The below isn't a copy from the GMAT. In the exam I eliminated the answwers with 'has' because of 'and' and the plural zebras and lions but I still am not convinced.

The zebras, the lions and an elephant have/has ......

Hi bsmith,

A subject that consists of a few nouns conjoined with "and" is always a PLURAL subject. Thus we need to use the plural verb form "have."

Hi

To avoid the confusion with the individual entities, consider reading this sentence as: A,B and C has/have..

Its HAVE.

You can also think of "The zebras, the lions and an elephant" as "they"

"They....have/has......"

You can confirm this by looking at the meaning of what follows "have/has" ---the it should make sense that what follows goes with the entire group of animals--rather than to a specific one.
