Hi Scott,

For HBS optional essay 3, "Tell us about a time in your professional experience when you were frustrated or disappointed ", can I use the experience from my graduate research ( I have an MS from US) and the relationship with my research supervisor in the initial days ? The situation involves a frustrating experience initially because of clash of different work cultures, misplaced expectations etc. Once we worked these out, we had a very productive working relationship.

My question boils down to : does the graduate research experience count as 'professional' for MBA application ? Thanks.

Hi CliffTim,

Since they make a point of saying "professional," I think that's' a pretty clear signal that they really want an example from the workplace. So, I'd recommend against using that example. The last thing you want is to look like you don't know how to follow directions!
