I agree that "although" seems redundant. Is there a comma missing? The sentence is not clear.

Also, D is wordy. "less succesful" is better than "he was less succesful". We have to avoid the verb "to be" when it is possible.

I agree with two errors you guys discussed above:

Redundancy with "although" and "nevertheless"
Error with the verb "to be"

The different tense between two compared items is need here. One is simple past, another is perfect pass.
