healthcare/pharma advice needed - NYU or Yale [#permalink] New post 03 Oct 2009, 12:17
Hello,

I'm in the middle of applying to both NYU Stern and Yale SOM via the Consortium common app. My undergrad major was chemical Engineering, and I have a Master's in Engineering management (with a concentration in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing practices).

I'd like to work in the pharma or healthcare industry post MBA. I know Stern is very highly regarded for its finance program, but I haven't read anything at all about any programs in healthcare or pharma.

Which of these 2 schools would give me a better shot at breaking into this industry? I'd like to know so that I can rank it higher on my Consortium app.

Thanks very much for any feedback

If you haven't already, you should check their career placement reports that are published on their websites, as well as the schools' respective healthcare management clubs. That should tell you more than anything which school tends to attract the big pharma / insurance / life science companies.

Hi,

I took your advice and went to both schools career placement reports. Unfortunately, both are pretty big on finance, and have almost nothing on Pharma (Yale doesn't even have data on people who went to work in pharma because there's so few of them.. NYU has a higher placement rate of the two, but it's still not huge).

although both schools are ranked similarly in the overall rankings, I would imagine that the yale brand holds more prestige, although I don't know if that will ultimately account for anything in the long run.

Not sure how "prestige" will help you in tangible terms. It's not like you're wearing a platinum necklace with ice-encrusted lettering spelling out "YALE".

If both schools don't send a lot of students into healthcare, then chances are that either one is fine -- because it will still come down to your own efforts anyhow in landing a job (which in truth is what happens at *every* school - you can't go into any school expecting to be "led" by career services or by the school; your career, your recruiting should be led by you, and it's still mostly your effort that matters).
