Was accepted to HEC to start in January 2010. After a LOT of research, self-reflection etc. decided to opt for American schools.

As people discussed above, when we inspect the pros and cons of the program, HEC Paris MBA tends to inflict conflicting opinions - on one hand, people (usually French) speak with instantly brightened eyes, say that it is the best school in France etc. On the other hand, others (usually non-French) say in a moderate excitement that the HEC MBA is a solid program, but if you want a top job in, say, consulting, INSEAD or LBS are better options.

The French sentiment with the "oh-so-mighty HEC" comes from the reputation HEC as 'grand ecole' carries around. The grand ecole is the mother school of HEC MBA, however, the HEC MBA is to be distinguished from the former, because the recruiters and companies will likely prefer the graduates from the grand ecole to ones from MBA. Of course, this will depend on many other factors such as the level of the job, but if we are talking about reputation alone, what the French want is the HEC graduates from the grand ecole - and/or HEC MBA done in French.

Overall, I decided to drop HEC from my list, because I am non-French, and I felt that HEC MBA is probably the best choice, if you are French. If you are native French, I do think that the association with HEC will work a lot favorably for your purpose.

Just my two pennies.

In any case, if you feel the school is the best choice for you, follow your hunch.

Good luck to everyone!

has anyone heard back on an interview decision or ding for the nov submission deadline?

About ten days after Nov. submission deadline I received an email stating that my application was approved for the interviews. One week later I received the contacts of the first interviewer and I'm having my first interview tomorrow.

No contacts for the second interviewer though, and at the same time the email stated that all the interviews must be finished before Dec. 30.

i believe the stats are about half the people who get invited for an interview get accepted. i'm not absolutely certain.

and yes, the presentation can be about any topic. Just make sure it's interesting, and mostly PC.

Is HEC seeing a reduced level of interest this year? seems like this thread is pretty dead, if anything i'm still seeing more action on LAST year's thread haha

I have the same impression. But, it is a reduced interest on the GMATClub forum, and I don't think it is representative of the global situation ;)

if accepted, how long do you have to make a decision / pay your deposit?

As far as I know, the timeline for the R2 admission is the following:

1. You must complete both interviews before 30/12/2010
2. Admission jury meeting - 07/01/2010 and admitted candidates are informed the next day

As soon as you are admitted

3. You have two weeks to apply for the fellowship
4. You have one month to pay the first security installment of 6000€

The problem is that INSEAD decision for R2 (I'm in the same boat as you ;) ) is on the Feb 25th, so if you want to use HEC as a security school for INSEAD, the price to pay is 6000€

If you have any specific questions, then feel free to ask.

Is there a kind of admits community for the HEC (such as MBA Connect for INSEAD) where one can see the number of actual admits?

If such service exists, can you have a look and tell us how many admits there are after R1 and what is the distribution between countries?

A linkedIn group is created for the admits and there you can see the admits and interact with them too. There is a linkedin group for Sept 2011 intake so you can join that if you have been admitted.

Does HEC call or email decisions? Does it usually happen on the date, or can it happen earlier? (Waiting on Jan-7 release date). Thank you

HEC emails decisions and on the date mentioned on the admissions calendar if all the interviews happened well in time.

Completed my interviews recently.

Does anyone know when the school will announce its decision?

Next week. Officially, the decision date is the 18th.
However, you can expect an answer the 16th or the 17th (espacially if it is a good one!).

I am waiting HEC answer for the 17th of this month and I have some questions about scholarships.

When admitted, do we have to pay the deposit to be considered for scholarship ? My concern is that part of the reason why I would accept an HEC offer (and it is the same for other schools) is based on the financial aid.

In addition, on HEC website they explain that we have one week to apply to scholarship after admission offer. Do you know what are the suject of the essays for the "HEC Scholarships for Excellence" and the "L'Oréal Scholarship" ?

Thank you in advance for your help.

I wish you to get a positive answer first!

Second, you don't need to pay to get the info about the scholarships, as soon as you will be admited you get a link and will be able to apply to the scholarship, and you will get results in about one week. speaking about the L'oreal scholarship, you will find the theme of the essay inside the postal when you get admited, so don't worry.

I'll be applying in the coming weeks as well. Do you mind sharing information about your profile? I'm very curious as to how specific factors are weighed in admission decisions at HEC Paris. Oh, and best of luck in the interview tomorrow!

The usual stuff. Why MBA/Why HEC/What do you want to do?
I met with a development manager from HEC who was in NY at the time.
The 2nd one was with an alumni (2007) who works in midtown. The alumni mentioned that there is a list of schools in Europe from which if you graduate, you could stick around for a year on a special visa.
Both seemed to go smoothly.

Great!!

Sorry, I just realized I didn't share my profile earlier.

760 GMAT 49Q 47V 6.0 AWA
2.5 years work experience in Economic Development (small business lending/marketing)
Undergraduate GPA 3.33 BCOMM (3.5 final two years)
Average references, nothing exceptional in that regard

I haven't applied yet but have started my application process with an expected submission date of Dec 14th 2010 or around that area. I just need to decide if I want to jump into the middle of the 2011 Sept. intake or hit R1 of the January 2012 intake. Do you have any suggestions?
