ARGUMENT
---------------------------------------
The following appeared in the editorial section of a local newspaper:
"In the first four years that Montoya has served as mayor of the city of San Perdito, the population has decreased and
the unemployment rate has increased. Two businesses have closed for each new business that has opened. Under
Varro, who served as mayor for four years before Montoya, the unemployment rate decreased and the population
increased. Clearly, the residents of San Perdito would be best served if they voted Montoya out of office and
reelected Varro."
Discuss how well reasoned . . . etc
The argument is flawed because it assumes that the overall economy of the country is same as it was four years ago. Furthermore, the argument does not provide details regarding the businesses that have closed and the businesses that have started in Montoyo’s term as a mayor.
Firstly, the argument does not provide any information regarding the changes in the overall economy of the country. It is quite possible that the overall economy was better four years ago and as a result the unemployment rate was better. Unemployment rate depends highly on the condition of the economy which in turn depends not only on the mayor of the city but also on many other factors. Nevertheless, unemployment could have been worst under the office of Varro if the economy would be doing badly. Therefore, without comparing the current economic condition with the economic condition fours year ago, one cannot blame Montoya for the increase of unemployment rate and decrease in population.
Secondly, the fact that two businesses have closed for each new business that has opened is not enough to believe that resident would be best served if they voted Montoya out o office and reelected Varro. This prediction will be false if the new business is larger and is beneficial for the residents of San Perdito in the long term. What if the businesses that have closed would, in any case, close soon and were not doing any good to the residents. The argument would be more convincing if it would have provided the details of all the new and closed business and would also state the long term effects of the new businesses.
Overall, the argument failed to provide supporting evidences and facts to prove that the residents of San Perdito made a wrong choice by selecting Montoya as mayor.
