I consider this as your career aspiration. Adcom interested in knowing what are your career goals and what quality you possess to achieve that. For me it looks like this
Dream Job :- Career aspirations
Covering Letter:- Your qualities to achieve your goals.
I consider this more as symbolic. If you want to start your own venture then consider it as writing to investors or bankers. Net search will give you standard letter but it will be beter to write what you want to do based on the net search results
This is my take!!

Thanks

Do we need to even mention the name of the dream company ?
What position should I mention ? If I want to become a portfolio manager with some leading investment mgmt company, what position do I get after graduating from the B-school ? :)

It is about dream job, How are your sure that you will get dream job just after management? Best luck!!
Just think like this if you are adcom. Why you will be at all interested in knowing whether the applicant wants to join BCG or Lehman Brothers. After reading the essay you will just draw simple conclusion that this person wants to make career in finance or consulting and what applicant want to achieve? But you can mention specific post it is better company you may or may not be. Definitely everyone can dream of being CEO or VP. One can write it. But at this stage it is very difficult to prove that you are better CEO?
