Help me evaulate my analysis of an argument. [#permalink] New post 06 Jan 2010, 19:27
Hi All,

I have scribed the argument with keeping 30 minutes time duration,it will be great if somebody evaluates and assign a grade to my argument. (I have my GMAT date 9th Jan :) )

**************************************************************
"Every person who earned an advanced degree in science or engineering from Olympus University last year recieved numerous offers of excellent jobs. Typically, many graduates of Plateau have gone on to pursue advanced at Olympus. Therefore, enrolling as an undergraduate of Plateau College is a wise choice for students who wish to ensure success in their careers."

*******************Analysis of the argument**********************
Argument concludes that students can achieve success in their careers by enrolling for undergraduate degree at plateau college.Author provides the fact that many graduates from plateau later proceeds for advanced degree in science or engineering from olympus university, which helped them receive excellent job offers. But author fails to provide details on student performance at plateau, their academic background, and there is no other cross refernece details with respect to any other college to come to the above conclusion.

First,Author fails to provide any information on Plateau collecge on its acedemic success, its student grades, its competative teaching environment or anything which adds value that admitting to plateau college would be wise choise for a student with keeping future study goals and job offers in mind.It would have been better if plateau compared with some other competitive college in same arena, which would have shed more light in believing that admitting to plateau will be a wise choice.

Second,Author fails to provide exact statistics on the students who have gone to pursue their advance at olympus.Since there may be some better college than Olympus where students of plateau may have not got any admission received and hence all would have settled to the only avialable option for them to pursue their advanced.

At last, though author mentions that there are numerous job offers of excellent type but fails to shed light on the current market environment. It may be possible that the market is in upward boom with lot of job openings for newly graduate of scince and engineering. And there is no details on other college graduates and their job offering they may have received to evaluate that Olympus has performed better than other.

Considering all the above mentioned loopholes in the argument it can be said that Argument is weak in its reasoning. If author had added the above details to the argument it could have strongly concluded further.

Thanks.
