The following appeared as part of a business plan created by the management of the Take Heart Fitness Center.
“After opening the new swimming pool early last summer, Take Heart saw a 12 percent increase in the use of the center by members. Therefore, in order to increase the number of our members and thus our revenues, which depend on membership fees, we should continue to add new recreational facilities in subsequent years: for example, a multipurpose game room, a tennis court, and a miniature golf course. Being the only center in the area offering this range of activities would give us a competitive advantage in the health and recreation market.”
The argument states that if Take Heart wants to increase its number of members and revenue, then it should add new recreational facilities in subsequent years. Stated in this way the argument is riddled with various logical flaws and relies on assumptions for which there is no evidential support. The conclusion is based on success of a recent activity and assumes that trend will continue in future.
First, the argument assumes that last yet Take Heart saw a 12 percent increase in the use of centre by its users. This statement is not based on any evidence. The increase in the number of users could have been because of some other reasons. The argument does not provide any peace of information which suggests the correlation between the opening of the swimming pool and increase in the number of users. The argument would have been much clearer if the exact reason of the increase in the number of members was specified
Second, The argument states that the centre would be the only centre in the area and have a competitive edge in the health and recreation market. It does not tells us how being the only centre with multu-range facilties is going to help the club. People in that area may not like a place wit multiple facilites and may not join the club .The argument would have been more stronger if it gave evidence that people would join a center with mutilple facilities.
Finally, the argument concludes that some new facilities should be added inorder to increase the number of memberships. From this statement, it is not clear how adding of new facilities will help in increasing the number of memberships. The activities mentioned are a multipurpose game room , a tennis court and a miniature golf course. There is not enough evidence that informs us about the intrest and usage of such facilities by the members of the area. One is left with the impression that the claim is more of a wishful thinking and it fails to show how the center will get new memberships.
In summary, the argument is flawed and unconvincing because of above mentioned reasons. It could be strengthened if more evidentiary support is provided. In order to understand a situation, it is essential to be aware of all related facts
