There's going to be new GMAT in June 2012, so taking your GMAT in April will allow you to take the GMAT with the current format. If you decide you do want to retake the exam, recognize that you'll have the month of May to retake the exam. After that, you'll be in June territory - which means you'll have to retake the GMAT AND study for a new section - the Integrated Reasoning.
But scheduling your exam is a good idea. Once you make your payment, it forces yourself to budget time to study and actually make progress.
