help securing french loan as US citizen [#permalink] New post 22 Jan 2013, 16:51
Hello,

I was wondering if any Americans on this forum have had experience taking out a student loan from a French bank?
You apparently need to obtain an international bank guarantee? I was under the impression that US banks were actually unable to issue bank guarantees. If true, do you know of any other way alternatives to a bank guarantee?

Or if this isn't true, do you know which banks offer this service?

Thanks in advance!

Hello, thank you for replying. This loan would be for HEC Paris.

If you have any advice, it would be much appreciated!

Hello,

I was in the same situation, only I'm based in Hungary. Firstly, here banks don't really issue bank guarantees for individuals only for corporates. Maybe I could have arranged it somehow but they said that they would issue the guarantee only if I deposit the loan amount in cash to their account and keep it there until the loan matures... which made the whole thing pointless since why would I need a loan if I can put the same amount in cash to their account? In the end that's why I gave up applying for HEC MBA.

I am neither a US citizen nor enrolling at HEC. But, if useful, I read that some americans are applying for a loan with Sallie Mae to attend Insead. Maybe this works?
