help securing french loan as US citizen [#permalink]
22 Jan 2013, 16:51
Hello,
I was wondering if any Americans on this forum have had experience taking out a student loan from a French bank? You apparently need to obtain an international bank guarantee? I was under the impression that US banks were actually unable to issue bank guarantees. If true, do you know of any other way alternatives to a bank guarantee?
Or if this isn't true, do you know which banks offer this service?
Thanks in advance!

Hello, I was in the same situation, only I'm based in Hungary. Firstly, here banks don't really issue bank guarantees for individuals only for corporates. Maybe I could have arranged it somehow but they said that they would issue the guarantee only if I deposit the loan amount in cash to their account and keep it there until the loan matures... which made the whole thing pointless since why would I need a loan if I can put the same amount in cash to their account? In the end that's why I gave up applying for HEC MBA.

I am neither a US citizen nor enrolling at HEC. But, if useful, I read that some americans are applying for a loan with Sallie Mae to attend Insead. Maybe this works?
