Help!! What are my chances of getting in to the phd program? [#permalink]
01 Mar 2012, 00:07
Hi,
I am seriously contemplating applying to a management phd program. At my age, I need to pick the right path. The admission stats at my dream programs (u of c and northwestern) are discouraging. Unless I can get into a top 20 program, I am hesitant to go. Can you help me gauge my chances?
Goal: phd in management and organizations
Work experience: Former senior manager from big 4 accounting firm Education: MA in social sciences field 10 plus years ago, program is ranked 11, gpa 3.9, thesis but no publications BA social sciences, liberal arts college, gpa 3.8 Test scores: tbd, aiming for 710-720 Concerns: I have heard that the phd programs don't value work experience. Is that true? My research experience was more than 10 years ago. How will that read?

Did you get any feedback or have you moved on with your application processes? Any news on it? I have a similar profile and would enjoy to hear how are things working for you. Thank you.

I think work experience is valued but not at the expense of research experience. The ability to tie your work experience into your research interests would probably assist you in your goals.
While a 710-720 GMAT is a strong score, it may be on the low end for T20 schools. It should be enough to get you past initial cutoffs but you will likely compete against applicants with equal to greater scores AND recent research experience. I definitely think it's possible to get into strong programs with your profile, but admissions are a crapshoot and it's often best to apply to a wide range of schools to increase your chances of admission.
