Help with Integrating Reasoning - CPI question [#permalink] New post 08 Jan 2013, 17:01
You probably know the question already, and I found a copy on the web at this page: www . kaogmat . com / ir / 4340 . html

For each of the following, select Yes if the statement is inferable from the given information. Otherwise select No.

1. The changes in seasonally adjusted prices for used cars and trucks between March 2010 and September 2010 were in most cases less in magnitude than the changes in seasonally adjusted prices of new vehicles for the same period.

GMAT Prep says: NO
The question asks if statement No.1 is inferable, and the definition of "infer" is to conclude by interpretation. The information cannot be inferred by a reader because it is read explicitly from the table and leaves no room for interpretation. The information states that in most cases the statement is True.

2. The seasonally adjusted CPI-U for all items was higher in March 2010 than in the previous month.

GMAT Prep says: YES
The question asks if statement No.2 is inferable, and the definition of "infer" is to conclude by interpretation. The information cannot be inferred by a reader because it is read explicitly from the table and leaves no room for interpretation (Answer: No). The information states that statement No.2 is False (without silly verbal argument, the answer is still No). Why Am I wrong?

3. The seasonally unadjusted change in the price of new vehicles in August 2010 over the previous month was about the same as the seasonally unadjusted change in the price of food away from home over the same period.

GMAT Prep says: NO
The information cannot be inferred from the table because seasonally unadjusted changes are not provided by the month.
