Each of Hemingway's wives--Hadley Richardson, Pauline Pfeiffer, Martha Gelhom, and Mary Welsh --were strong and interesting women, very different from the often pallid women who populate his novels.

'Each'/'Every one' are singular nouns, so the usage of verb 'were' as in choices A, B and E are incorrect.

Choice 'D' the modifier 'Strong and interesting women' seems to modify only 'Hadley Richardson' and not the other 2 ladies. Also the sentence construct is very awkward.

C. Each means it has to be singular so it should have been was a strong and......
were stong and interesting women is plural and fits best when sentence starts as Hemingway's wives
Answer is C in my opinion
