Given the options..E

the usage of words such as “cast, broadcast, and cost.” As far as I can remember the past tense and past P. of broadcast is broadcast; however recently I checked an online dictionary and it has broadcasted. Is this an American standard or has it always been like this?

A)Herbert Morrison broadcast the only live radio report from the scene of the fire that destroyed the German Zeppelin the Hindenburg in a passionate account that stunned listeners.

B)In a passionate account that stunned listeners, Herbert Morrison broadcast the only live radio report, being on the scene of the fire that destroyed the German Zeppelin the Hindenburg.

C)The only live radio report was broadcast by Herbert Morrison, a passionate account that stunned listeners, from the scene of the fire destroying the German Zeppelin the Hindenburg. --> seems to say 'Herbert Morrison is a passionate account'. wrong.

D)Broadcasting the only live radio report, Herbert Morrison passionately accounted the scene of the fire that destroyed the German Zeppelin the Hindenburg to stunned listeners. --> altered meaning of original statement. wrong.

E)In a passionate account that stunned listeners, Herbert Morrison broadcast the only live radio report from the scene of the fire that destroyed the German Zeppelin the Hindenburg.

My thought process:
1. Option A sounds bad. Eliminate.
2. zero in on the two most similar options i.e. B and E - Take E over B (incorrect 'being' usage)
3. C seems to say 'Herbert Morrison is a passionate account'. wrong.
4. D - altered meaning of original statement. Wrong.
in the original statement, 'account' is a noun and 'broadcast' is the action word.
However, in this option, 'account[ed]' is changed from a noun to an action word.

Answer: E

E should be the answer.
It's a modifier related question - The answer option should place the modifiers correctly keeping the intended meaning.

In A, Herbert Morrison broadcast the only live radio report from the scene of the fire that destroyed the German Zeppelin the Hindenburg in a passionate account that stunned listeners. Here listeners stunned for Herbert Morrision not for Hindenburg.

Shouldn't the verb be in paste tense? 'Herbert Morrison broadcasted….' or 'Herbert Morrison broadcasts….'?

Position of Modifier plays main role in choosing correct answer.
Modifier is - in a passionate account that stunned listeners
Which makes A,C & D out .
Now left with B & D
In B - being on the scene of the fire that destroyed the German Zeppelin the Hindenbug - Sounds peculiar
In E - from the scene of the fire that destroyed the German Zeppelin the Hindenburg. - make sense

So E

This one is tricky. I got it way wrong but when I found out what to look for it was pretty easy -- though I still curse its existence.

Quote:
Herbert Morrison broadcast the only live radio report from the scene of the fire that destroyed the German Zeppelin the Hindenburg in a passionate account that stunned listeners.

D)Broadcasting the only live radio report, Herbert Morrison passionately accounted the scene of the fire that destroyed the German Zeppelin the Hindenburg to stunned listeners.
E)In a passionate account that stunned listeners, Herbert Morrison broadcast the only live radio report from the scene of the fire that destroyed the German Zeppelin the Hindenburg.

This sentence correction problem tests are understanding of what the sentence is really trying to convey. We need to understand that

Herbert Morrison broadcast is a passionate account.

A)Herbert Morrison broadcast the only live radio report from the scene of the fire that destroyed the German Zeppelin the Hindenburg in a passionate account that stunned listeners.
It's unclear what exactly is the passionate account. It could be the broadcast or it could be the fire that destroyed the Hindenburg. We need an option choice that clearly conveys what is the passionate account.

B)In a passionate account that stunned listeners, Herbert Morrison broadcast the only live radio report, being on the scene of the fire that destroyed the German Zeppelin the Hindenburg.
B correctly calls the broadcast a passionate account but it incorrectly uses the word "being".

C)The only live radio report was broadcast by Herbert Morrison, a passionate account that stunned listeners, from the scene of the fire destroying the German Zeppelin the Hindenburg.
Answer Choice C also incorrectly modifies the wrong thing as a passionate account. It modifies Herbert Morrison. Remember that it is the broadcast that is a passionate account.

D)Broadcasting the only live radio report, Herbert Morrison passionately accounted the scene of the fire that destroyed the German Zeppelin the Hindenburg to stunned listeners.
D is somewhat tricky. This one also gives the wrong meaning. Herbert Morrison did not account the scene. Instead, he gave an account.

E)In a passionate account that stunned listeners, Herbert Morrison broadcast the only live radio report from the scene of the fire that destroyed the German Zeppelin the Hindenburg.

E is the winner.

Re: Herbert Morrison broadcast the only live radio report from [#permalink] New post 22 Jan 2015, 03:31
My thought process on this one. Several wrong options have meaning errors:

A)Herbert Morrison broadcast the only live radio report from the scene of the fire that destroyed the German Zeppelin the Hindenburg in a passionate account that stunned listeners.
--> The modifier passionate account is misplaced and wrongly modifies Hindenburg instead of the broadcast.
B)In a passionate account that stunned listeners, Herbert Morrison broadcast the only live radio report, being on the scene of the fire that destroyed the German Zeppelin the Hindenburg.
--> Here the original meaning is not clear that the Broadcast "was the only one from the scene". Makes it seem this was the only live radio report ever and his "being" at the scene is a separate fact/coincidence. In many cases "being" can be correct.
C)The only live radio report was broadcast by Herbert Morrison, a passionate account that stunned listeners, from the scene of the fire destroying the German Zeppelin the Hindenburg.
--> Again meaning is wrong. Says Herbert Morrison broadcast the "only live radio report" of all time.
D)Broadcasting the only live radio report, Herbert Morrison passionately accounted the scene of the fire that destroyed the German Zeppelin the Hindenburg to stunned listeners.
--> Again meaning is wrong. Says Herbert Morrison broadcast the "only live radio report" of all time. Also the account itself was passionate and not Herbert's way of reporting it.
E)In a passionate account that stunned listeners, Herbert Morrison broadcast the only live radio report from the scene of the fire that destroyed the German Zeppelin the Hindenburg.
--> CORRECT. Modifiers are all in correct places and meaning is clear as well.
